“That first night I wrote a will, I thought I was going to die,” said George, 36, in an interview on Saturday, January 11 with The Sun.
The Want a forward remembers waking up with icy blue hands on December 11, 2024, while he was staying with his mother.
“I hadn’t been feeling myself for a few days, I started to feel a bit rough,” said George. “I couldn’t put my finger on it. I was quite lethargic and stuffy, struggling to get out of bed. But I didn’t think it was anything serious.”
Max George is currently in hospital being treated for heart problems. “Yesterday I felt very ill and was taken to (the) hospital,” The Wanted frontman, 36, wrote via a lengthy Instagram post on Thursday, December 12. “Unfortunately after some tests they’ve found out that I have some problems with my heart.” George, who (…)
He continued, “Luckily, I had gone round to my mum to wait and I woke up and I remember looking at my hands and they were blue, and my arms were gray and I was freezing.” n cold I had trouble even sitting up in bed.”
When George’s mother saw him, she gasped and called a doctor. While George was checked and sent home, his mother continued to ask around for help.
“At this point I had a feeling of panic, but I was also completely depressed,” she said. “I couldn’t move my arms and the worst feeling was that my throat was closing. It felt like someone had their hands around my neck. Thank God I stayed at Mum’s house – she saved my life.”
Doctors told George that something “wasn’t right with the bottom part” of his heart and that he would need a pacemaker.
“For some reason the rhythm is way off and the signal doesn’t seem to get from the top chamber of your heart to the bottom part, the part that pumps the blood around your body,” recalled the doctors tell him. “I was in complete shock.”
George called the experience “very scary” noting “it certainly wasn’t where I thought I’d be at 36.”
“I was awake all night, felt a tightness in my throat, I had trouble moving and I had very deep and slow breaths,” he said. “There was nothing they could do to stop it. I could have lived maybe a few weeks, maybe a few months, but it could have been a few hours. We didn’t know.”
Two days after being admitted to hospital, George’s heart rate dropped to 26 beats per minute.
“Friday, December 13, was the worst day I had there,” he said. “My heart rate and blood pressure dropped at the same time, which was the biggest concern.”
While interviewing Hugh Grant on his “SmartLess” podcast, co-hosts Sean Hayes confirmed his recent cardiac issues. He continued, “The consultants were not there to do the emergency operation. It was quite close that night, it felt like my throat was closing and that’s when the panic kind of set in. I felt like I was dying. It was the worst, I felt emotional.”
George was taken by ambulance to hospital on December 15, where he underwent a CT scan. He received a pacemaker three days later, with his partner Maisie Smith at his side as he became aware of his surroundings.
“I had a very good heartbeat by then too. My heart rate started to shoot up. So I remember feeling my feet getting tingly, because I think obviously the blood started pumping around properly,” he said.
He continued, “I was like, ‘Holy s—, I feel alive again,’ so it was a really nice feeling. It had been so hard to be away from Maisie, but she climbed on the bed, obviously lay on the other side of my chest to my head, and put her head for me. We cuddled for a couple of hours while I talked about football and we treated it like normal. I could feel butterflies again next to her.”
