“The best 14 years of my life 🤍 I will cherish those years and you for the rest of my life,” Madeline wrote via Instagram in September 2024 days after her husband and brother, Johnny Gaudreau, both were killed.
News broke on August 30 that Matthew and his older brother, NHL player Johnny, were hit by a vehicle in New Jersey while riding bicycles. They were 29 and 31, respectively. The brothers and sisters were in town to serve as groomsmen for their sister Katie‘ marriage.
“I want you to come back home,” Madeline, who is pregnant with her and first baby Matthew, she wrote through her Instagram Story in September 2024. “I miss you so much and love you so much, baby.”

The newlyweds honeymooned in Grenada the summer after their wedding, sharing beach photos online.
Madeline announced via Instagram that she is pregnant with the couple’s first baby, due in December.
Matthew and Johnny were killed on August 29 while cycling in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. Us confirmed that the man was driving the vehicle that hit the siblings suspected of being drunk. The driver was arrested and charged with manslaughter following the accident.
There is Johnny and Matthew survived by their parents, Guy a Janeand sisters Katie and Kristen. In addition, Johnny, who played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, left his wife, Mereditha their two childrenNoah and Johnny Jr.
Matthew, who played hockey in college and then in the minor leagues, is survived by his wife and their unborn child.

They were each other’s biggest cheerleaders,” Madeline wrote via Instagram tribute about her late husband and his brother. “Matt looked up to John in so many ways but the most important was the father he was to Noah and Johnny. I take great comfort in knowing that they are together, as they always were. I know they are still messing with each other up there and they will continue to look after their families.”
Madeline shared a message with her sister-in-law Meredith about their “extreme heartbreak and terrible bond” after their husbands’ deaths.
“The boys could not have chosen a stronger woman (sic) as their wives and mothers of their children. We’ll carry each other through every season … like the boys would do for each other,” he continued. “They blessed us with children … through them we will always have a part of them earth side with us forever. I love you my handsome husband, I love you John, I love you Meredith, I love you Noah, I love you Johnny and I love you baby Tripp.”
