Matt Reeves hasn’t closed the door on his Batman joining James Gunn’s DC universe

When James Gunn and Peter Safran were given the keys to DC Studios, things seemed so clear. Matt Reeves was making his Batman movies, and those lived *here* – and Gunn and Safran were going to shepherd a new Batman DC Universe, and he lived with them *here.* At least, this was the plan in 2023. Since then, Reeves’ Batman follow up it was postponed twiceGunn and Safran are gone to shoot and cast several projects, and now there is a question – especially among fans – about whether or not having two separate Batman movies makes sense.

To date, Gunn has stood firmly behind Reeves, going until defending the delay of 2027 The Batman Part II and introduce Batman in his DC Universe, via animation Creature command. But speaking at the Golden Globes this week, Reeves himself seemed to admit that his Batman, played by Robert Pattinson, could become the Batman of the DC Universe.

“It’s really about whether it makes sense or not,” Reeves said reporter Josh Horowitz. “What was great is that there was a story that I wanted to tell with what we call “The Epic Crime Saga”, and all that is the thrust of what we want to do. And it was important for me to be able to play that. And James and Peter have been really, really great at it. What does the future hold? I have no idea now except that my head is down to get it The Batman Part II to shoot and to do something really, really special which, of course, is the most important thing.”

Whether it makes sense or not, it probably comes down to two things: timing and story. The timing in which Reeves will shoot The Batman Part II later this year for an October 2027 release. By that time, several movies and shows in the DC Universe will have been released and Gunn and Safran will have to decide if they should just do their Batman story (The brave and the bravepotentially directed by Andy Muschietti) or integrate Reeves’.

But still, Reeves is clear here that he is allowed to do what he wants. And what he wants, the story of Batman that he tells, cannot agree with the canon or tone of Gunn and Safran. It is also a consideration. So, as Reeves implies here, it is possible, but they will wait and see.

Speaking of waiting, Reeves also admitted that the delays of his film have not been ideal. “There’s a lot going on and it’s taken longer than I would have liked,” he said. “But I’m also super excited about what we’re doing, so I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

He also said that he hopes that the main villain will be a surprise and that the film will not be exactly what most people expect. “The story is a continuation in one way and completely different in another,” Reeves said. “(It’s) going to show different sides of Rob. I think it’s going to be very exciting.”
