Mark Karni, economist and political newcomer, on Friday, as a new Prime Minister of Canada, just a few days after the election of the leader of the ruling liberal party.
In its previous roles, the governor of the Canadian Bank, the Central Bank of the country and the Bank of England, Carney had previously helped both countries to bring serious financial violations.
This experience is expected to be needed if Carney is negotiating a long trade war with US President Donald Trump.
He will replace Prime Minister Justin Trudu after winning the landslide in the liberal leadership last week.
General Governor Mary Simon will preside over the oath of Carney – the 24th Prime Minister of Canada – and his ministers of the Cabinet. The moment officially marks the end of nine years of political power for Trudu.
But the holiday associated with the inauguration of its successor may be short -lived if Carney decides to make the following federal elections in Canada – now scheduled for October.
When the election takes place, Carney is expected to compete with the best candidate to take Trump in the trade war he launched after returning to the White House.
Karni promised to defend Canada’s mutual tariffs for certain US goods while Trump supports 25% universal tariffs for Canadian goods that are not covered by Canada-Merxica Trade Trade (CUSMA).
“We cannot allow him to succeed,” Carney said in his speech on Sunday.
As long as the Americans “show us respect”, Carney said his government would maintain US import tariffs.
“I know it’s dark days,” Carney said. “We can no longer trust the dark days caused by the country.
“We overcome the shock, but let’s never forget the lessons: we have to look after ourselves and we must turn to each other. We need to gather on difficult days.”
Canada depends on the trade from the US. Economists say it risks recession when Trump’s tariffs are fully imposed.
When the federal election comes, Carney’s main competitor will become a conservative leader Pierre Puliverere, who is compared in his style with Trump – which is now considered by some vigor as electoral responsibility, not an asset.
Before the threat of tariffs, the Conservatives received a 20-point preference in some election elections. Now some surveys indicate a much closer race.
When Canadians go to the polls, liberals will face not only with conservatives – which are the official opposition with 120 places in the House of Commons, but also in Quebec, which has 33 places, and new Democrats who have 24 years.
