A man is recovering in hospital after bravely acting as a human shield for his 21-year-old girlfriend during a near-fatal carjacking in Washington, DC
Couple were sitting in their car in northwest D.C. just after 8 p.m. Monday when they say a masked man approached them and demanded the vehicle, FOX 5 affiliate reported.
When the couple tried to leave, the suspect they started shootinghitting each of them five times, the report said.

The woman’s family told FOX 5 that her boyfriend “covered her with his body and took the brunt of the bullets,” suffering a punctured lung.
While the couple was able to escape armed suspectthey later crashed a quarter of a mile down the road.
A good Samaritan called the family to let them know what had happened.

“At first I thought it couldn’t be,” a family member told FOX 5. “I asked if she could get closer to her so I could hear her voice and know she was okay.” Everyone needs to feel safe when they walk out their door, they don’t need to worry that someone is going to take their property or their life from them.”
A woman underwent surgery and additional procedures are likely to be required, the report said.
D.C. police told Fox News Digital that as of Wednesday evening, no arrests had been made and the patients’ status remained unchanged.
“There is no useful information at this time and the case remains under investigation,” officials said.
