Mali Junta dissolves all political parties in the last opposition repression

Military junta Mali dissolved all political parties in the country amid the growth of repression on dissent since the army has seized power.

“All meetings of political parties and political organizations are dissolved throughout the national territory,” state television said on Tuesday.

The decision was checked by the military leader Assimi Hoita, who seized power after the upheavals in 2020 and 2021 and should remain in power for at least five years, despite the commitments to hold the election.

It is expected that this step causes fresh resistance to political parties that require the country to return to democratic government.

Since last year, the military authorities have intensified the repression of political activity.

Last week, after a rare pro -democratic protest, two opposition leaders were abducted by armed men who said they were police officers. Authorities did not comment on the arrest reports.

This step has caused condemnation of opposition figures and human rights groups. Initially, the junta pledged to hold elections in February 2022.

The Presidential Decree, read on Tuesday, warned Maliks not to ignore the dissolution of political parties, but not outlined any punishment.

It states that anyone who works in a political or administrative role can “continue their duties without party affiliation.”

The main opposition coalition is not yet commented, but one of its members, Nuhum Togo, has conveyed the move in a social media report.

“Regardless of how difficult they are trying to make you invisible, your value is independent of their recognition,” the President of the Union for the Protection of the Party of the Republic (USR) has published.

The latter order follows the suspension of all political activity – another recommendation of the national conference – which caused the shock of the opposition.

Last week, a coalition of a hundred parties planned a protest against the transition bodies, but postponed it after the suspension of political activity.

Since the adoption of power, Junta leader has created an alliance with the leaders of the upheavals in the neighboring Burkin -Phasa and Niger, turning the region towards Russia after a sharp decline in ties with the former colonial power of France.

Gen Goïta also abandoned Mali from the Ecowas Regional Group on its requirements to restore democratic rule. Burkina -fos and Niger also left the group.
