Singapore – French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday urged Europe and Asia to strengthen the coalition and avoid enhancing the break between the US and China.
Speaking to the annual Shangri-La Defense Forum in Singapore, Macron called on the Prime Ministers of Indo-Pacific and Defense Ministers to create a “new coalition” to withstand “restrictions and side effects” that follow the US rivalry.
“France is a friend and ally of the United States and is a friend, and we cooperate – even if we sometimes disagree and compete with China,” Macron said, adding that the country is doing so, following the “demanding approach of our own interests.”
Macron said “the division between two superpowers” is the main risk that confront the world.
Macron’s speech goes against the backdrop of a regional tour, which also drove it to Vietnam and Indonesia. The European leader sought to strengthen France’s defense cooperation with other countries, concerned that he would receive incidental damage in the US trade war and against the background of prolonged geopolitical disputes with Beijing.
In Jakarta earlier this week, Macron and his colleague signed a preliminary defense pact, which could see Indonesia acquired more French weapons, including Rafale fighters and submarines Skarpen.
