Little liar trophy alum Lucy Hale and Ian Harding Still an enthusiastic “Ezria” sailors-despite the characters’ controversial age difference.
“It was a different time. Would that story line exist if it was done now? I’m not sure, but probably,” said Hale, 36, Hollywood reporter In a profile Friday, June 20. “At the time I was cast as Aria, I was 19 and I didn’t really think of the more themes of all. I had just been stocked to be cast in a TV show.”
He added, “Of course, it hits differently in my age now and I think of the bigger message in anything I play. I don’t have repentance, nevertheless. I stand behind his love story forever. Forbidden love story pulled out a lot of people. “
Hale Aria played Montgomery on All seven seasons from ABC family (now free) PllWhere he met Ezra Fitz (harding) in a bar in the pilot. She insisted she was a college student before they grabbed the bathroom. Days later, it was revealed that Ezra was her new English teacher on her first day in the junior year at Rosewood High School.
Aria and Ezra were, of course, dating and away throughout its high school tenure with no school administrators information. Eventually, they finally married the series, which was broadcast in 2017.
While fans of the show often question Aria and Ezra’s a controversial age gapThe actors were always aboard the ship.
“What we tried to show over and over was that there was a meaningful connection,” said Harding, 38, Thr. “Hopefully, that was enough to justify the very problematic relationship that was certainly not great at the time. Especially as society moved on, we realized how wild it was.”
He continued, “I’m happy with the way it happened because that may make it a little less Icky, which is always hard to say because I also love those characters. I love Ezra and as an actor, you have to advocate for this person, no matter who they are. They are. Both found happinessand there was little parallel damage or pain caused by the relationship. There was plenty of pain and horror everywhere on the show, but strangely, their relationship seemed to be a safe haven in the storm. “

“We were playing into this fantasy. I certainly got the fantasy teacher when I was in high school, but at the same time, the fact that you are depicting something on television does not mean that you condone the behavior,” said the verbal actor. “It’s a story edited for entertainment, and the show was a thriller. Now that I look back on it, I see it’s just like the show, with the winds and turns, and it had some horror elements and then had this romance component too. I don’t really regret its fiction because it is fiction.”
Pll was modified from I. Marlene KingBook Series of the same name. King, 63, also addressed the connection of Aria and Ezra in the Through serialize postoperative.
“What we know now about preparing an inappropriate relationship, that wasn’t something we talked about 15 years ago. I’ve always thought that if we were to revisit the world, we would have to deal with that,” King told the outlet. “That would be a story line that we would have to address and focus her. But, I think they can be happy ever after that because they were everyone’s favorite couple.”
He added, “I know that people argued that they were not, but they were very popular – and they really loved each other despite the fact that he knew who she was before she found out. We always tried to make results for their relationship. It wasn’t easy. We definitely crossed a line that I wouldn’t cross now, but I don’t want to take a lot of fans.
King and the rest of the writers also wanted to ensure that Hale had “as much agency as possible” while filming close scenes with Harding.

Freeform/Eric McCandles“Marlene and the writers did a very good job of giving Lucy as much agency as possible. I didn’t feel as though my character had started many encounters with her,” Harding remembered. “He always felt like she was the driver of that part of the relationship. Half of the time, the scenes she and I had were practical domestic. We were talking about what was happening at school while I was cooking or we would be a journal together.”
He added flirting from Ezra’s wardrobe, “When you wear sweater vests, that doesn’t get the libido to go. The writers and creators tried to play down that side and ramping a sense of Lucy’s agency.
