Liverpool Jones’s former defender dies at the age of 70

Liverpool and Wales, Joey Jones, has died at the age of 70.

Jones played 100 times for Liverpool between 1975 and 1978, winning two European Cups, a UEFA Cup and a league title.

The left side also won 72 Caps for Wales, starting and ending his career in Wrexham after spells in Anfield, Chelsea and Huddersfield.

Former Jones team-team Mickey Thomas published X: “This morning I lost my best friend and soul companion, Sir Joey our memories will never fade away; today my heart is broken. I love you Sir Joey Rip. My condolence is with Janice and the whole family.”

Jones’s contribution to Liverpool was immortalized in the legs of “Joey Ate The Frogs, he made the Swiss roll, and now set up the Gladbach banner revealed by 1977 European Cup victory over Borussia Monchengradbach.

The banner referred to the victories on St Etienne and Zurich in the fourth and the semifinals.

With Wrexham, Jones won the Welsh Cup and helped the club reach the quarterfinals of the FA CUP in 1974.

A post from the X Club read: “Wrexham AFC is devastated to discover the passage of club legend Joey Jones. An authentic club legend, outside and off the pitch, over time for everyone he met, Joey will be very lost by all who knew him.”

There were also tributes to X of the old Liverpool stars, Jamie Carragher, and John Aldridge and the Welsh football association, Noel Mooney.

Aldridge wrote, “What a beautiful man and an inspirational back who gave his heart and soul with a red t -shirt and for all the clubs he played! Our thoughts are with Joey’s family! I’m a lucky man to have known many times.”
