Big corporations are not known for taking risks. This is as true in the world of consumer hardware as anywhere else. Annual updates are largely incremental, with small changes to things like screen resolution or image quality.
It’s a phenomenon that Lenovo is more than happy to unleash when it shows off the latest updates to its PC lineup every year. The offerings are usually a combination of products and concepts, the latter of which may never see the light of day, but serve as a consistent reminder of what’s still possible for PC makers to think outside the box. box
CES 2025 marked the transition of the rollable laptop from concept to product. The ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 will arrive later this year, for the low, low price of $3,500. The centerpiece of the product is a display that mechanically expands up to 16.7 inches. It is not an immediate transformation – in fact, the actual unfolding process is subtle. But you just have to wait about 10 seconds to go from point A to point B.
The easiest answer to the “why” of the product is “because it’s clean.” More pragmatic, however, is the ability to carry around a significantly larger screen in a relatively small form factor. From this point of view, it is similar in principle to foldable phones.
A few other products presented at CES are still firmly in the concept phase, but deserve mention here. First is a large-screen desktop, which uses on-board motion tracking to follow the user around. Adjust height or move left or right. It’s essentially the desktop version of the moving AI Auto Twist PC that the company showed off in September.
In particular, the case and the base of the system have been constructed from a combination of bamboo and wheat, in an attempt to move towards more sustainable hardware manufacturing. The system was on display with a wireless keyboard that charges exclusively with the monitor’s ambient light.
