Democrats in Congress are balancing efforts to resist tough President Trump while pledging to work with him wherever possible once the Republican commander-in-chief takes office.
It comes as moderate Democrats and Democrats in vulnerable seats have made moves toward Republicans in areas such as border protection and transgender youth in the wake of the GOP’s landslide victory in the 2024 election, which the right has widely interpreted as a mandate for a more conservative America.
“My job is to fight to make life better for Texas families, and I will work with anyone, Democrat or Republican, who is interested in reducing costs, securing our borders, and keeping our communities safe,” Freshman Julie Johnson -Texas , who attended the inauguration, the statement said.
“But make no mistake, I will always stand up to President Trump, his administration, department and far-right extremism if any of these individuals or organizations threaten our way of life.”

Sen. Catherine Cortez of Masto, R-Nevada, who ran in tight races in 2016 and 2022 and is expected to do so again in 2028, said in a statement: “I look forward to working with the new administration to lower prices, create jobs, and keep our communities safe, but make no mistake, President Trump is using his position to harm hard-working Nevadans, I will always stand up for them.”
Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Calif., took a similar conciliatory tone.
“There is progress on housing, environmental protection, public safety, immigration reform, national security, etc. .

“I also firmly believe that our diversity is our strength and our unity is our strength to persevere and succeed despite the many challenges we face. Law-abiding immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, women and families recovering from devastating disasters. natural disasters are understandably concerned about campaign rhetoric and the possible policies of the Trump administration.”
Other Democrats were more cautious in their statements, like Rep. Chris DeLuzio, who said on X: “Today and always, I root for our country and wish (President Trump) well as he takes responsibility to lead America.”

Progressive Rep. Becca Balint, R-Vt., however, made it clear she would take a tougher approach to Trump.

“Day 1 under Trump. We must face these challenges and attacks with courage and clarity. I am ready for the future work of protecting our Constitution and will work tirelessly to meet the pressing needs of Vermonters and workers across America,” she said. wrote on X.
