A large fire swept through the coastal cities of Palai Focai and Timars 40 km (25 miles) southeast of Athens, destroying the houses and forcing the evacuation when it approached the beach.
The flames broke out in low vegetation, but quickly spread to residential areas when Greece survived its first thermal wave of summer.
According to local officials, at least 20 houses were destroyed and many others suffered structural damage.
Strong winds and temperature height up to 40 ° C made fire extremely difficult to control.
The locals joined firefighters, forest ranks and planes, trying to restrain the fire and protect their homes. The Coast Guard was also deployed along the coastline.
The emergency notifications were issued through 112 systems, urging residents to evacuate a number of cities and villages.
Greece sought to increase its reaction to forest fires, which are becoming more common because of its long hot summer and warming climate.
An additional 18,000 firefighters, backed up by volunteers, were deployed this year, officials inform the rest of the fire, which ends in October.
Earlier this week, thousands of hectares were set on fire, the fifth largest island of Greece. A Georgian woman was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of unintended fire, discarding a cigarette.
One resident of Timar told the Greek web -resite Kathimerini on Thursday that as long as she reached her home, he burned out of a strong wind. Another said that his neighbors’ homes were destroyed, but he was lucky.
Next to the east along the coast towards Cape Sunnion, at the tip of the Attica Peninsula, the fire crossed the coastal road and moved towards the ridge of the nearby hill.
Authorities said more than 1000 people were evacuated from the affected areas. According to local authorities, eleven tourists were rescued from the beach after the trap of the coming flame.
Despite the evacuation orders, some residents refused to leave and tried to protect their homes using garden hoses and other improvised funds. Authorities warned that such actions were threatened with life and hindered emergency services.
According to the Greek state television, at least 40 people, including children and elderly residents, were rescued by police after being trapped.
The press -secretary of the Fire Service Vasileios Acatrajanis said the firefighters were involved in an intensive battle on Earth and in the air, especially in areas where the fire was burning near the houses.
Local officials in the domestic -level villages called the situation extremely difficult.
“All the objects of the municipality were open to those who needed asylum or medical assistance,” said Babis Galais, a local deputy mayor.
The head of the Greek Fire Service ordered the scene a special unit for investigation to study whether the fire was intentionally.
According to the Greek Risk Assessment Committee report, an extremely high temperature is expected on Friday, with a very high risk of fires in atoics, Evia, Pelopanese and the Northern Aegean Sea.
