Lachlan Shaw’s ridiculous save denies Alex Ross a six in BBL, commentators stunned

Sydney Sixers cricketer Lachlan Shaw caught everyone’s attention with an amazing save near the boundary line in the 2024-25 Big Bash League (BBL) match against Adelaide Strikers. Lachlan Shaw saved a certain six on the boundary line, denying Alex Ross a maximum, which left the commentators stunned.

Sydney Sixers won the toss and elected to play first at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday 15 January. Matt Short, who scored just 4 runs off 7 balls, was dismissed off a Jack Edwards delivery in the first over. D’Arcy Short scored 10 runs off 9 balls before being bowled by Todd Murphy while attempting a reverse sweep.

Alex Carey scored 18 runs off 13 balls, including three fours, before being dismissed by Todd Murphy. Jordan Silk completed the catch in the deep to get rid of Carey, leaving Australia at 35/3 in 4.5 overs. Ollie Pope and Alex Ross balanced the innings with a 97-run partnership off 70 balls for the fourth wicket.

Watch: Lachlan Shaw goes wild near the boundary line

The incident took place on the first ball of the 11th over in the Adelaide Strikers’ innings. Lachlan Shaw made an incredible boundary save. Alex Ross tried a big sweep to clear the shorter boundary off the bowling of Jafer Chohan, but Shaw got a hand and flicked the ball back into play in one go.

Lachlan fell over the ropes and no one was in a position to complete the catch. Shaw’s quick thinking and athleticism saved five runs for his team. It looked like the ball would easily clear the boundary ropes, and the commentators were surprised to see so much athleticism from the Sydney Sixers fielding.

The Big Bash League’s official social media account X (formerly known as Twitter) shared the clip of Shaw’s fielding effort with the caption: “Too bad Lachlan Shaw, this is an all-time save !”

Amazing to be able to throw the ball back and not overbalance – Michael Hussey

Michael Vaughan, who was on the commentary panel, praised Shaw’s boundary as “magnificent”. Adam Gilchrist highlighted Shaw’s proactive thinking and ability to avoid touching the tightrope while in the air. Michael Hussey noted how Shaw managed to throw the ball backwards without overbalancing.

“That’s magnificent … that’s five runs in the tank before even batting,” Michael Vaughan said.

“He’s in the air as he picks up the ball, but he’s still thinking proactively about releasing it, making sure his foot hits the string more,” added Adam Gilchrist.

“It was an amazing effort … amazing to be able to throw the ball back and not overbalance,” Michael Hussey said.

“Incredible effort. I thought it must be Jordan Silk out there, but it wasn’t Lachie Shaw.
