Watch: key points from negotiations of Belensk-Trump-white house

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky returned to the White House on Monday to meet with US President Donald Trump for fresh talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

Several European leaders also raised their plans to attend the meeting, a few days after Trump met with Russian President Putin in Alaska at the summit, which could not receive ceasefire.

Here are the key trips from talks in Washington.

Zelensky launches a charming offensive

Given its emergency last visit to the oval office in February, the Ukrainian president went on considerable length to become collegial and charm of his US hosts – including a flurry of six “Thank you” for the first few minutes of the meeting.

The last time he was in the White House, Zelensky was swore by Vice President J. D. Vens for the perceived lack of gratitude for the support of Ukraine during the war.

Another trial at the February meeting – Zelensky’s clothing – also returned.

This time Zelensky was dressed in a dark suit, not in traditional military clothing, and seemed well -prepared with a joke when asked about his outfit the same reporter who had previously criticized him for not carrying a suit to the oval office.

After the reporter told him he looked “fabulous”, Zelensky fired that he was in the “same suit” as last time, causing laughter from journalists, Trump and other officials in the room.

“As you can see, I changed,” he added.

Zelensky also sought to play Trump’s family during the meeting, passing a letter from the first Lady of Ukrainian Elena Zelensky to deliver Melania Trump.

“It’s not for you – your wife,” he said.

Delivery of the letter occurs only a few days after Trump passed a letter from Melania to Vladimir Putin, being in Alaska, in which she urged Putin to protect the “innocence” of children and “raise hope of the next generation.”

“She sees her heart,” Trump said of his wife’s letter to Putin.

“She would like it to end. And she speaks very openly, very proudly and with great sadness, because so many people were killed.”

Trump hints at security guarantee

One of the questions that was about Zelensky is what he will need in the US to guarantee the safety of his country. Was they troops, intelligence, equipment?

At the moment that conveyed the sense of urgency, which he seemingly tried to suppress for most of the press conference, Zelensky leaned forward in his chair and urged: “Everything.”

“We need a strong Ukrainian army,” he added. “It’s about weapons, people, training missions and intelligence.”

By pressing it to journalists, Trump made several links on security guarantees for Kyiv.

He said that Europe would be the “first line of defense” for Ukraine, but also promised to “participate”.

“We will give them good defense,” the president said at one point.

This is the most decisive Trump, which, if -sounded on the issues of security guarantees, which are usually regarded as the main deal with Russia.

On Monday, the US president said that during the Alaska summit last week, Putin acknowledged that security guarantees would be guaranteed within any peaceful transaction.

But the lack of details about what these guarantees may be composed of Kiev and Europe, and the closed doors will undoubtedly try to hit Trump that the US restraint should not be just symbolic.

It would be welcomed the constant stream of weapons into Ukraine; The promise of US boots on earth would be even more next.

This level of commitments at this stage can be difficult to get from the US.

But the fact that Trump did not rule out it at all will give Ukraine and its allies the hope that he can convince him.

Triplates on cards?

One of Trump’s very sparse goals is the organization of a trilateral meeting with Zelensky and Putin.

Before his negotiations with European leaders on Monday, he said that this question is now “if” not if “such a meeting will take place.

Although it can be easier than determining the terms of a peaceful transaction, it will by no means easy.

European leaders also traveled to the White House on Monday to discuss the way to stop war

Zelensky has been pushing for a few months to meet with Putin. This was probably a way to prove his argument that Russia did not take peace seriously because he knew that Putin was not interested in consent to meet this kind.

Indeed, the Kremlin repeatedly refused and two weeks ago claimed that the Russians and Ukrainian presidents had no reason to meet until “after the corresponding distance” between the positions of the two countries “overcome”.

Trump will hope that his mediation efforts are now overcome.
