“I would certainly think that over the last few years… I was forced to become mentally stronger, in a way,” says Smollett, 43, say only Weekly US Before Première Season 4 of the Special Forces on Thursday, September 25.
Smollett added that he became stronger in a sense that he cannot be “affected as much” as he once was through the public’s opinion about it.
Smollett, which was started as a child starring in The mighty ducks and later rose to fame with his role as Jamal Lyon’s Empire on a fox, made headlines in 2019 when claimed he had been a victim of hate crime. He received support from supporters and loved ones before authorities accused him of staging his own attack.

Smollett was then accused of uncontrollable felony behavior for making a false report by the police. Prosecutors dropped the charges in March 2019, but by then, Smollett had already been written out of Empire.

Smollett, who has carried out his innocence throughout his legal drama, was convicted of five felony counts of unruly behavior in 2021. The sentence on appeal was confirmed in 2023, but the Supreme Court of Illinois devoured the conviction in 2024, indicating that Smollett had fulfilled his 2019 plea agreement.

“I didn’t know what to expect. But listen, let’s keep it 100, right?” He explains. “Like, I knew entered Special forces.
It continues, “And my dad, growing up, gay, all those things, they really dive in. I think it’s a three-hour pre-interview. They really dive into your personal (life) and that’s not always comfortable, but I think it’s the whole mission to make you so uncomfortable that you face yourself and you face some challenges and you are facing some challenges and you are facing some challenges and you face some challenges?
Smolett concludes, “Yes, so I wasn’t so afraid they were raising him. I was preparing. I didn’t know how things would be brought up. But again, these people were hard and they were rough and they were harsh, but they were also very loving.
