The Turn off about a home makeover, but a star Christina Halldivorce drama with her estranged husband, Josh Hallalready stealing the show.
In an a whole new insight of the upcoming HGTV show, Josh, 44, and Christina, 41, have a tense moment while driving to a project before their split.
“This is competition, you have to pull out all the stops. Whatever it takes to win, I’ll do it,” Josh tells Christina in the clip.
To pump up his spouse at the time, Josh shouts, “Halls rule!” but Christina gives him the silent treatment from the passenger seat.
“You’re supposed to say it with me or repeat it or something to show you’re with me. Remember, you’re Hall now,” Josh says, which leads to Christina letting out a big sigh.
Josh then looks over her and reminds her of that they’re supposed to be a team. “Don’t get confused in this competition about what your last name is,” he said in a negative tone, before calling the Christina on the Coast “rude” star.
Christina claims that she’s not “over-talking,” which fires Josh up even more. “You know how much if— you say it and I’m like, ‘I wish you’d shut up already?'” she asks.
Christina lets out an audible “uhhh” sound as they continue on their journey. “My wife is already pissing me off,” Josh says and Christina asks him, “Are we there yet?”
At the end of the clip, Christina meets her ex-husband and The Turn off competitor Tarek El Moussa and he will know immediately something is wrong.
“I know that look. What’s going on? You good?” El Moussa, 43, asks. Christina takes a beat and then tells him, “No,” revealing, “Josh and I officially broke up.”
Christina and Josh tied the knot in April 2022. During their marriage they collaborated on Christina in the Countrywhich followed Christina’s renewal efforts in Tennessee. It also appeared on Christina on the Coastwhich focuses on Christina’s projects in California.
In May 2024, the pair revealed they would be competing against Tarek’s ex Cristina and his wife, Heather Rae El Moussaon The Turn offwhich premieres Wednesday, January 28. (Christine and Tarek previously worked together for 10 years on HGTV’s Flip or flopwho filmed before, during and after their divorce, which was finalized in 2018. The exes share two children: Taylor, 13, and Brayden, 10.)
While Josh was intended to have more of a role in The Turn off than his past collaborations with Christina, that changed when they both filed for divorce in July 2024. (Their lawsuits still going on with Christina hiring a powerhouse attorney Laura Waters in November 2024 to speed up the process.)
Us Weekly has since been fully confirmed at the time The Turn off was already “in production”.Christina, Tarek and Heather, 37, were “getting on with the show without” Josh.
In November 2024, Us confirmed that Christina’s other ex-husband Ant Anstead he would partner with her for “part of the show.” Christina and Anstead, 45, were married between 2018 and 2020 and share a 4-year-old son Hudson.
Later that month, Christina opened up about her past relationship with her Josh and their working dynamicwhich he claimed was not positive.
“When someone (feels) unsure of you and doesn’t like to see you win, that really puts a damper on everything,” he claimed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the time. “I feel, like, I wasn’t shining so bright to try not to make him feel emasculated, but who wants to live like that?”
Christina said it was “not fun” and that she “didn’t enjoy filming with him,” so their breakup made it “much easier” to work.
She then claimed Josh didn’t like her “dynamic” with ex Tarek. “Some would call it ‘flirty.’ It’s more, like, a sibling-like thing,’” she added.
Tarek, for his part, just say Us in October 2024 that he “never, never in my life thought this show would happen” with his wife – with whom he shares son Tristan, 23 months – on one side and ex-wife on the other side.
The Turn off promises to be a “throwdown competition” between Christina and Tarek (with Heather’s help) to see which former can “find, renovate and flip a house with the most financial benefit,” according to the official statement to’ the press. The winner will get “bragging rights and first class vacations paid for by the loser.”
The Turn off premieres on HGTV Wednesday, January 29, at 8 pm ET and is available to stream the same day on Max and Discovery +.
