The Refinitely Expected Back Chapter Shows a snapshot of how Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Joel Miller is very much alive (Pedro Pascal) He spent the last five years in Jackson. But first, the show took viewers even further back to Austin, Texas, in 1983.
Joel young (Andrew Diaz) comes face to face with his father (Tony Dalton) For an emotional discussion about parenting – which is played later in the episode. It is revealed that Joel’s surveillance (the one who never took it even though he had broken) originally belonged to his father.
Flashing on to 2024, Ellie and Joel have lived in Jackson for two months, and this is her 15th anniversary. Joel gets her cake and gives her a guitar. (Yes, she called a “Babygirl” at one time too, but let’s not talk about that.)
The following year, Ellie turns 16 – and their relationship is still very intact. Joel takes Ellie to “space” by bringing her to a dormant museum he finds in patroling the trees.
Things are starting to change on her 17th birthday, however, with Ellie doing “all teenagers at once,” including having a tattoo, making drugs and hooking in her bedroom. In the middle of the night, Ellie begins to move to create a bedroom in the garage and Joel agrees that they need their place.
“You may not like the rules, but this is my house,” says Joel. Ellie replies, “No, not. You don’t own it. They gave it to you. Sorry, for us. You don’t own anything.”
The show then jumps two years, which gives viewers in 2028 (the year before Joel dies), and Ellie spends her morning -a conversation practice that she needs to have with Joel about what went down in hospital with the fire extinguishments when he “rescued”. The conversation never happens because Joel offers her birthday gift to Ellie-her first pattern ever. This is where, for a lack of a better term, S *** really starts to go down.
Ellie and Joel have a peaceful patrol with him teaching her the ropes when they find a member of the Jackson community, Eugene (Joe Pantoliano), which has been bitten by infected. Joel promises Ellie they will take Eugene back to Jackson so he can say goodbye to his wifeGail (Catherine O’Hara). However, he lies and shoots Eugene dead. Ellie, in rage, realizes that Joel lied to her about what actually happened in hospital all years ago.
A jump of nine-month time brings viewers back to New Year’s Eve in 2028-y A day before Joel was murdered. At last he has a much needed conversation.
“You’re so *******. You lied to me. You looked at me in the eyes, and you were lying, and there was the same face. The same look f *** ing,” said Ellie. “I think I already knew. I knew all this time. So I’m going to give you one last chance. Tell me what happened with the fire defects. If you lie to me again, we’ve done.”
Joel admitted killing everyone in hospital at the end of term 1, telling Ellie that she was the only immunity for Cordyceps virus and a healing could have been made of her brain – but would have been killed.
“Then I was supposed to die. My purpose, my life would have been important, but you took that from me! You took that by everyone,” Ellie Yells. Joel answers, “Yes, and I will pay the price because you are going to turn from me.”
Joel admits that if he had a second chance, he would not have changed.
“Because you’re selfish,” Ellie declares.
Joel responds, “Because I love you in a way you can’t understand. You may never be. But if that day should come, if you should ever have your own, well, then, hope you do a little better than me.”
Ellie and Joel are sober at this point.
“I don’t think I can forgive you for this,” said Ellie. “But I would like to try.”
