Jenna Bush Hager shares her personal connection to a mystical camp: her mother, Laura bushis a councilor.
“My mother was a councilor there,” said Bush Hager, 43, on the episode on Monday, July 7, of the Today Show. “But also so many of my friends were raised in this camp. Texas camps are organizations.
Bush Hager noted that “many” had his friends in the camp last week, adding that the stories he heard over the last couple’s days were “beautiful and heartbreaking.”
“Texas have a Type of resilience Where they are generous people, where people want to reach out and help. Texas camps are very special because you think of 90 degree weather, no air conditioning, ”he said.
Bush Hager explained that her childrenwhich she shares with a husband Henry HagerAlso in camps in Texas. (The couple, who tied the knot in 2008, shares Mila, 12, and Poppy, 9, and Son Hal, 5.)
“My kids are in the camp in Texas and my husband said, ‘Why are we sending children out to Texas to camp? It’s hot,” he said. “And that’s because of the love there.”
The Today with Jenna & Friends The host paid tribute to Dick Eastlandwho served as the camp owner and died while trying to save the campers.
“Texas royalty is the Eastland family. They picked up so many women and his son, who has passed too, went to (university) Texas, where I went,” he shared. “But so many of my friends said he was their summer tad. He looked out for his campers. He rose women to be brave and loving and his legacy will live.”
Flash floods began in Texas on Friday, July 4, and have killed more than 80 people, including 27 Campers and Counselors At Camp Mystic.
“Our hearts have broken alongside our families who continue this inconceivable tragedy. We are constantly praying for them,” read the Mystic Camp website. “We have been communicating with local and state authorities who use extensive resources tirelessly to look for our missing women.”
The statement continued, “We are very grateful for deporting community support, first responders and officials at all levels.
