At the moment, comics fans are a bit divided on whether the DC Universe (DCU) will be a success. Some think it will succeed in rivaling the early Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in popularity, but others worry that it will repeat most (if not all) of the mistakes that sank the Universe Extended DC (DCEU). However, some recent casting news gives us great hope that this upcoming cinematic universe will, at the very least, be more true to the comics. Now that James Gunn has greenlit Jason Momoa to play Lobo in Supergirl: Tomorrow’s Womanit has effectively fixed the DCEU’s biggest casting mistake.
Momoa, if we’re being honest, was always the weirdest part of the DCEU. For example, actors like Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot always seemed perfectly cast because their on-screen appearances mirrored (more or less) the comic portrayals of their characters. AquamanHe was, however, always a stubborn and regal king in the comics, but the DCEU transformed him into a mostly mindless party man who only existed to chug beers and shout bad one-liners. James Gunn probably wanted a more comics-accurate cinematic universe, and Jason Momoa is perfect casting for Lobo because, frankly, his King of Atlantis has already acted too much like this crude. alien a warrior
However, if you simply look at the box office receipts, moviegoers seemed to love Momoa’s performance as Aquaman (at least, at first). First James Wan Aquaman movie grossed over a billion dollars at the box office, making it by far the most successful movie in the DCEU. However, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom earned a relatively puny $439.4 million, with the sharp decline signaling everyone’s collective superhero fatigue and, perhaps, collective disdain at Momoa’s one-note performance as the title character.
Why, then, are we so convinced that James Gunn made the right decision to cast Jason Momoa as Lobo, especially when he reminds us of the failures of the DCEU? As previously noted, he’s basically been auditioning for the part for years now. The Aquaman we saw fighting alongside the Justice League or fighting to save Atlantis didn’t really resemble the character from the comics because he came off as a direct-to-video action star with “cool” dialogue ” tweet that could have been written by a five year old. That kind of dialogue is more suited to Lobo, a character known for his over the top lines and bad attitude.
As James Gunn knows, Jason Momoa also has the perfect build for Lobo, a character whose ripped body is constantly on display (that’s what happens when you wear the vest but skip the shirt). However, the attitude-based performance of the Aquaman actor is much more important than his body because this is a character whose violent and devilish attitude is the polar opposite of Superman’s moral Boy Scout. We don’t know yet how Milly Alcock will play Supergirlbut it looks like she’ll have the perfect enemy (and, presumably, a reluctant third act ally) if Momoa gives Lobo some of his leftover DCEU ferocity.
Finally, while this doesn’t guarantee a great performance, it’s great to see James Gunn casting Jason Momoa as Lobo because the actor has spent many years discussing how he would love to play the role. Every great performance on screen begins with the actor’s passionate dedication to the project, and we know that Momoa is quite passionate about playing the last of the Czarnians on screen. Coupled with Gunn’s own passion for this extraordinary universe he brings to life, the future looks extremely bright for him. DC supporters.
Before anyone raises their trident to throw it at us, I’ll finish by acknowledging that Momoa has always been a great superhero performer, but he’s been held back by the very limited vision (sorry not sorry break it to you, fanboys). of directors as Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon. After the success of movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and shows how Peacemakerit’s clear that James Gunn is as passionate about comics as Jason Momoa is about Lobo. And considering we’ve been waiting decades to see the Main Man on screen in a live action movie, we’re now more hyped for the DCU than ever before.
