Ex-patron of England, Michael Atherton, has criticized the Cricket Board of England and Wales (ECB) for not choosing Jacob Bethell for the single test against Zimbabwe. The commissioner converted into a cricket questioned the logic that allowed Jacob Bethell to stay in the IPL 2025 ahead of an international facility.
Jacob Bethell was not included in the template for the test against Zimbabwe because of his IPL commitments with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Bethell impressed during his debut series in New Zealand earlier this year. The SouthPaw scored three half a century as it became number 3 of the 2-1 series victory in England.
Michael Atherton said that Jacob Bethell should have been included in the squad of England. Speaking at the Podcast Sky Sports Cricket, he said that international accessories should prioritize national franchise competitions such as IPL.

“My opinion is that Bethell should have been chosen. This is the point of a central contract: you have control over your players,” said Atherton.
“If you are going to put a player in a complete central contract, Bethell had moved from a contract increnting to a complete agreement after doing so well in New Zealand, and returning to your player.”
“It’s a test game. It is international equipment and international accessories should prioritize domestic franchise competition. I know that politics is that players should see through their IPL offers, but I do not especially agree with it,” he added.
Michael Atherton said that Jacob Bethell had impressed New Zealand. Atherton expressed uncertainty as to whether Bethhell would be taken to the squad with the return of player Jamie Smith.
“In many ways, selectors saved a very difficult call. Bethell looked at New Zealand’s way, but then they would have had a complicated decision, as Smith again,” said Atherton.
“They could take Bethhell to the workforce, but I’m not sure they do it because they probably are happy with not having the hard call yet.”
With the Indian Premier League suspended for at least one week in the midst of border tensions, there may be an opportunity for the ECB to remember Bethhell for the next test against Zimbabwe. However, it is not yet known if the ECB will take some action to return it.
Jordan was ruled out of the next game due to an abdominal injury just after marking a century for Essex. England has named James Rew, 21, in the squad against Zimbabwe.
The Somerset Wicketkeeper-Baterter, which has reached ten first class centuries, is the youngest English to reach this milestone from Denis Compon in 1939. Meanwhile, Bethell’s omission is notable, especially with the inconsistency of Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope under pressure, despite the performance of Jamie Smith.
