Rome has finalized the draft resolution of 13.5 billion euros ($ 15.6 billion) for the construction of the longest suspended bridge in the world, connecting the island of Sicily with the Calabria region, on the outskirts of Italy.
Designers claim that the bridge – which should be built on one of the most seismically active areas of the Mediterranean – will be able to withstand earthquakes.
This is the latest attempt by Italian officials to launch the Messina Bridge project – somewhat tried over the years, but the plans were later abolished from the problems of costs, environmental damage, security and potential mafia.
The Prime Minister Georgia Meloni acknowledged that the last project was not easy.
However, on Wednesday, she stated that he considered it an “investment in the present and future of Italy.”
“We use difficult problems when they make sense,” Meloni said.
According to the final project, the bridge over the Messina Strait will cover 3.3 km (2.05 miles) and stretches between two 400-meter (1300 feet) high, with two rail lines in the middle and three roads on both sides.
Rome hopes to classify the bridge as military expenses to make it count on NATO’s 5% GDP spent on defense.
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, Right Party leader Lego and ally of the Meloni government, said Milah, saying that the purpose was to complete the bridge between 2032 and 2033.
He also claimed that the bridge would create 120,000 jobs a year and bring economic growth in the area. The regions of Sicily and Calabria are the two poorest in Europe.
However, the project should still be enshrined in the Rubber Italian Court of Auditors, as well as environmental agencies, both at the national and EU level.
The locals on both sides of the Strait, the properties of which can be expropriated, will also have to consult and can legally challenge the decision, which means that the construction of the bridge can be delayed or delayed altogether.
This is not the first time the bridge building was detained. Ever since the first plans for it more than 50 years ago, various ideas had to be delayed for various reasons, and it has long encountered a harsh opposition.
This included the concern that the huge amount of taxpayers’ money would be discarded by Sicilian and Kalobrian mafts, which have a broad influence on politics and society in southern Italy.
On Wednesday, local politicians confirmed their misfortune with the government’s decision.
Senator Nicolas Irtta from the Democratic Party (PD) called the project “Contransed and separate”, saying it would distract “important resources from local transport, modern infrastructure, safe schools and quality medical institutions.”
Giui Kaminiti, Mayor of Villa San -Govanani, near where the bridge will be built on the coast of Calabra, said that her city would be greatly affected and calls for more time for consultation.
The Nisa Kolobrian commissions “not to the bridge” crashed on Wednesday and stated that it was a political maneuver, not the results of a careful technical assessment.
Local groups that oppose the bridge also say its construction will use millions of liters a day, while Sicily and Calabria are regularly struggling with drought.
Currently, the only way to cross trains is to make coaches go to ferries and moved through the sea in a 30-minute journey.
