As the Israeli war enters the new, violent phase, an increasing number of votes in the country oppose it – and how it fights.
YAIR GOLAN, the left politician and the former deputy commander of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), caused indignation on Monday when he said: “Israel goes on the way to the state of Paria as South Africa was unless we return to activities as San Country.
“The smart state does not wage war against civilians, does not kill the infant as a hobby and does not aim to depopulation of the population,” he said to the popular morning program of Israeli public radio.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repelled back, calling the comments as a “slander of blood.”
But on Wednesday, former Israeli Defense Minister and IDF Chief of Staff – Moshe “gods” Johnon – went on.
“It’s not a” hobby, “he wrote in a report on X,” but a government policy, the main purpose of which is the maintenance of power. And this leads us to destruction. “
Just 19 months ago, when Hamas weapons crossed the fence to Israel and killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, returning 251 years to gas as hostages – such statements looked almost incredible.
But now Gaza is in ruins, Israel has launched a new military offensive, and although it also agreed to raise its 11-week blockade to the territory, just Still entered the stream of assistance.
The last poll on the 12 Israel channel showed that 61% of Israel wants to end the war and see how the hostages came back. Only 25% support the expansion of the fighting and the occupation of the gas.
The Israeli government insists that it will destroy Hamas and save the rest of the hostages. Netanyahu says he can achieve a “full victory” – and supports a strong kernel of fans.
But the mood among others in Israeli society “is a despair, trauma and lack of sense of ability to change anything,” says former Israeli hostage negotiating Gershan Baskin.
“The vast majority of all hostage families believe that the war should end and there should be an agreement,” he adds.
“The small minority believes that the main goal is to complete Hamas, this is what you need to do, and then the hostages will be released.”
On Sunday, about 500 participants of the rally, many in T -shirts with the inscription “Stop horrors in the newspaper” and wore photos of babies killed by Israeli airline tickets, tried to leave the city of Sero to the border of Gaza, in protest against the new offensive of Israel.
They were headed together – a small but growing anti -war group of Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel. After trying to block the road, the leader of the Alon-Le Green group was arrested with eight others.
From the house arrest, Mr. Green said the BBC: “I think you can see the awakening in the Israeli public. You can see that more and more people are occupied.”
Another activist standing together, Uri Weltman, said he believes that the belief is growing that it “not only hurts the Palestinian civilian population, but also risks hostages, risks the life of the soldiers, and risks the lives of all of us.”
In April, thousands of Israeli reservists – from all the military – signed letters that demand that the Netanyahu government stop fights and focus, rather than allowing the deal to return the rest of the hostages.
However, many in Israel have different views.
On Wednesday, crossing Kerhem Shalom in Gas, the BBC talked to Gideon Hashavit, who was in a protesting group.
“They are not innocent people,” he said about those in Gaza, “they make their choice, they chose a terrorist organization.”
This is against some of the most extreme parts of the Israeli society – a group of settlers – what UK on Tuesday announced fresh sanctions.
In its strongest step, the UK also suspended talks on a trade agreement with Israel and caused the country’s ambassador – with the UK Foreign Minister David Lami, who calls Military escalation into the newspaper “Morally Unjustified”.
The EU has stated that it is reviewing the Association Agreement with Israel, which regulates its political and economic relations with Kaj Kalas’s foreign policy chief, which declares a “strong majority” members who prefer to look for a 25-year agreement again.
On Monday night, the UK joined France and Canada, signing a heavily formulated joint statement by condemning Israel’s hostilities and warning about “further specific actions” when the humanitarian gas situation did not improve.
“The mood changes,” says Weltman, “the wind begins to blow the other way.”
