Russia is ready to stop in the fight, says Vladimir Putin, but there are “nuances”. The nuances he had set out ahead of the negotiations with US messengers in Kremlin are so key to his thoughts that they can defeat any hope for a 30-day ceasefire.
These are the requirements he had throughout Russia’s large -scale invasion. And for Ukraine and its Western partners. Many will be unacceptable or impossible.
“We agree with the proposals to stop the hostilities,” he began positively, just adding: “This stop should be such that it will lead to long-term peace and eliminating the root causes of this crisis.”
No one will agree with the need for long -term peace, but Putin’s idea of the root cause of the war revolve around Ukraine’s desire to exist as a sovereign state outside the orbit of Russia.
Ukraine wants to become part of NATO and the European Union – so much that it is enshrined in the Constitution.
President Trump has already raised doubts about NATO membership, but Putin repeatedly rejected Ukraine’s idea as a state.
And this is at the heart of the many nuances he drew.
He wants to prevent Ukraine from strengthening his army and supplementing weapons – so there would be no more supplies from the West. He wants to know who guarantees it will be checked.
Since the beginning of this war, Putin demanded the “demilitarization” of Ukraine, which is anathema of Kiev and his ally.
Essentially, Putin is looking for security guarantees in reverse.
Would Russia agree to stop the load or mobilize its strength? It seems implausible, and on his part there was no hint that he appealed to journalists in Kremlin.
Putin has just returned to the bull mood from the front line to Kursk, the Russian border region, which is partly occupied by Ukraine last year.
Russia has the top in Kursk. Putin clearly feels that he is negotiating from the position of force and does not want to lose it.
“If we stop the hostilities for 30 days, what does it mean? Do everyone who’s there, leave the battle?”
On Thursday, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that its forces have taken full control over the largest city, which the Ukrainians managed to seize, the court. Putin says all Ukrainians have left the wedge, so why is Russia stop now?
“If a physical blockade appears in the coming days, no one will be able to leave at all. There will be only two options-to give or die.”
The same thing that applies to the entire line of the 1000 km (620 mile), where he claimed that the situation on the ground had changed rapidly, and Russian troops “moved in almost all districts”.
This is not the case, because the majority of the front is on a sweatshirt, even if Russia has had some recent success in the East.
Putin believes that the 30-day ceasefire regime will deprive Russia of its advantage and allow the Ukrainians to regroup and overload.
“What guarantees we have, that nothing like this is allowed,” he asked rhetorically.
So far, no mechanism has been proposed to ensure that the conditions of any ceasefire will be held.
Although 15 Western countries were pre -proposed by peacekeeping troops, they would only come in the case of the final peace deal, not the ceasefire.
Not that Russia would still allow this agreement.
Given all these “nuances”, Putin was skeptical of how the ceasefire could benefit Russia, especially if his troops were on his front leg. His whole forecast was “based on how the situation on Earth is developing.”
Putin met with Trump’s messengers in Moscow on Thursday, in particular Steve Witco.
Whatever happens in these negotiations, Putin knows that his most important conversation will eventually be with the president.
“I think we need to talk to our American colleagues … Perhaps calling President Trump and discuss it with him,” he said.
But Putin spread the stall in front of these conversations, with the message that the road to ceasefire was littered with conditions that were almost impossible to meet.
