In a significant movement to face the unprecedented challenges that faced during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025The Cricket Control Council in India (BCCI) has introduced a significant rule change for the rest of the season. The decision occurs when the league is preparing to resume on May 17, after a suspension for a week triggered by cross -border tensions between India and Pakistan.
The BCCI has announced that the franchises will now be allowed to sign temporary spare players for the rest of the IPL 2025, an exit from the previous regulations that only allowed replacements in the case of injuries or illnesses before the twelfth game of a team. This adjustment is specifically designed to address the widespread non -availability of foreign players, many of whom have been called due to national commitments, personal reasons or ongoing security concerns after the recent geopolitical discomfort.
Delhi Capitals has already become the first team to use the new rule, contributing Mustafizur Rahman As a temporary replacement of Jake Fraser-Mcgurk.
A crucial stipulation accompanies this rule adjustment: any player signed as a temporary replacement after the suspension will not be eligible for retention by the franchise for the 2026 season. These players must re -enter the auction set if they want to participate in IPL 2026. Instead, those signed as replacements before the suspension, such as Ayush Mhatre (CSK) (PBKs), are still eligible for their withholding.

In a note to the franchises, the IPL clarified:
“Given the non-availability of certain foreign players for national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, temporary replacement players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament. This decision is subject to the condition that temporary substitution players that are made from this moment cannot be eligible for the retention of the following year. The temporary replacement players will have to register at 2026. “
The IPL, which was suspended on May 9, will resume with a Reviewed schedule. Seventeen games, including two double heads, will be played in six places: Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Playoffs begin on May 29, for the final purpose of June 3. The previously interrupted match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala will be reproduced in Jaipur on May 24.
