Mumbai Indians’ main coach Mahela Jayawarde has shed light on the strategic decision to mainly use the old captain Rohit Sharma As an impact substitute during the IPL 2025 in progress. Jayawardene cited a persistent injury that suffered during the victory of the Indian Champions Trophy campaign and the evolved tactical requirements of the team as key factors that influence this approach.
In a press conference ahead of the crucial meeting of Mumbai Indians against Gujarat Titans, Jayaedene revealed that Rohit has been managing a “black” from the previous part of the year. “No, it wasn’t at first. Obviously, Rohit was on the pitch in some of the games.” He declared Jayawardene, leading in the initial phase of the season.
He also elaborated that the composition of the team and the demands of various places need players capable of fulfilling multiple roles, including the agile field, especially near the boundaries. “But if we look at the team’s composition, most boys play double roles. Most are bowling. At the same time some of the places need boundary runners,” He explained. “You need boys with speed and all that. So it also comes into play.”
Jayawardene emphasized that the decision to use Rohit as an impact sub-sub was not a pre-plain strategy, but a reactive measure both to its physical condition and the dynamic needs of the workforce. “Rohit was also breastfeeding the Champions Trophy. So we wanted to ensure that we did not push it too much. Added.

The 38 -year -old workshop, a wear of the IPL and a five -time captain winner of the title for me, has presented predominantly as a specialist batter this season. It usually enters the game as an impact substitute, often joins the field only towards the end of the Mumbai Indians bowling and has been significantly absent to field for most parts. This strategy, according to Jayawardene, aims to manage Rohit’s workload and preserve its physical form for its main role at the top of the battle order.
Despite a slightly slow start of the season, Rohit has rediscovered his shape at a critical moment, accumulating 293 throws in 10 entries, including three half a century. Its valuable contributions have provided solid beginnings for the team and coincided with the impressive resurgence of the Mumbai Indians. The team has joined six consecutive wins, rising to third place in the IPL Point Table 2025 with 14 points of 11 games.
With two games at home, Mi is in a strong position to get a playoff baga.
