Absence of Yash Dayal from the Indian team for the upcoming T20I series against England has raised questions among fans. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad on Saturday night, which notably featured the return of Mohammed Shami, but did not feature Dayal.
The left-arm pacer replaced Khaleel Ahmed in India’s list of reserve wicketkeepers during the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy and was also part of the 15-man squad for the tour to South Africa.
1.) Recent performance and selection options: Dayal’s exclusion appears to be a strategic decision by the selectors, who opted for other bowlers like Shami and Harshit Rana. The selection committee is likely to focus on players who have shown consistent performance in recent matches or who fit best into their plans for the England series and the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.
2.) Composition of the team: BCCI’s decision to include a mix of experienced players and emerging talent makes competition for places fierce. With Shami returning from a long injury lay-off and other players like Arshdeep Singh also being considered, Dayal may have found it difficult to secure a place in the final line-up.
In first-class (FC) cricket, Dayal has played 27 matches, claiming 84 wickets at an average of 28.78. His best bowling figures in an innings are 5/48, while his best match is 9/121. At an economy rate of just 3.00, Dayal has been a reliable bowler in the longest format.
In List A cricket, he has featured in 23 matches, taking 36 wickets at an outstanding average of 23.86. His best performance, 5/31, highlights his ability to dismantle batting line-ups. A strong economy of 4.61 further shows its effectiveness.
In the shortest format (T20s), Dayal has played 56 matches, picking up 53 wickets at a strike rate of 20.8. Although his economy is higher at 8.46, his ability to break partnerships at the best of 3/20 makes him a valuable asset.
With his remarkable skill set, Dayal remains a promising prospect for the future of Indian cricket across all formats.
