At the age of 33, I sometimes feel that a thousand lives have already lived. I come with Los -egeles, and over the last decade I’ve been doing everything teaching English in China to serve as emergency workers in Turkey during the Syria war.
After I completed my Master’s Degree in London, I started working as the head of the Global Travel Tech company, and I had the opportunity to transfer to the US or Germany where my husband was.
Considering my decision, I made some math and I realized that in Germany, even with a lower salary than what I would potentially earn in the US, I could achieve my financial goals, such as Pay my student debtRather.
Since February 2020, I called Berlin, Germany, and was never happier. That’s why I love to live here:

My husband and I live in the area west of Berlin called Charlotburg, a relatively quiet neighborhood filled with cozy cafes and middle -class families. I am in the first name with many store owners and I love the community here.
We live in 2100 square feet, a two -room apartment with a balcony. We pay $ 1843 a month for rent, about $ 350 for utilities and $ 240 for parking. We paid around London, but in our Berlin apartment is twice as large, and the building is much more new.

For the products, I am a big fan of the subway, which is essentially a Costco Germany. Every two weeks we spend about $ 300 on our main staples. We fill as needed by other items purchased from local budget sellers such as ALDI and LIDL. Lidl sells 45 Cent Brötchen, or bread buns that are my favorite.
In Germany, the government provides things such as guaranteed health care, pensions, parental vacations, university without training and even unemployment insurance. I have several friends who were fired but thanks to insurance they were able to get 80% of the earnings for one year.
If I decided between the US and Germany, I Crunched a few numbers And I realized that on the social security network – and, for example, there is no need to delay thousands of dollars for medical emergencies – I will be able to save from $ 1000 to 3000 each month. It made a huge difference.

When I arrived, I collided with $ 130,000 in student debt. I managed to pay it all in November 2023, still saving and invested in my future. It was great weight from my shoulders and I don’t worry I wouldn’t be able to pay my accounts here.
My money goes on and I am also happy to make my fair share so that people can access support when they need it.
The fact that I was most surprised, and when I came to Berlin, was a deep sense of egalitarianism, which seemed to share everything, regardless of their prerequisites.
Many cultural events There is free entry because access and participation here are great basic values. One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to study the cafes in other neighborhoods and go to the power festival.

Festivals are fun, inexpensive (I usually spend only $ 12 on drinks and snacks) and often note different cultures and countries. This is a great way to meet like -minded in the city of 6 million.
I also found that the immigration community of Berlin, which I am so proud of being a member, is especially friendly. We all understand how much the discharge of leg finding in a new place may be.
In February, I would be a German resident for five years. This means that I will have the right to apply for a passport and dual citizenship rather than just permanent residence.

Holding a German passport means that I have the opportunity to move anywhere in the European economic zone. My long-term dream-wound retirement, get chickens and live peacefully in the Italian village. Getting the CES passport is the key part of this plan.
Ultimately, despite the fact that I called a lot of places home, the decision to come to Berlin opened me more ways than I considered it possible.
