Artificial intelligence is around us, and films about artificial intelligence have been around even longer than the technology itself – going back as far as the 1927 film Metropolis. But as AI evolves, our storytelling about it changes too. While you are following Hbo and max This month, Watch with us recommends checking CompanionA funny horror comedy that invites us to see things from AI perspective.
Companion related to Iris (Sophie Tatch. Yellowjackets), a young girl covered with her boyfriend Josh (Jack quaid. The boys) But a little nervous about going on holiday with his friends. A few minutes into the film, however, Iris teaches that she is a companion robot from a company called Empathix, programmed to love Josh. When Josh sets up Iris to take the fall for a crime she forced her to commit, Iris seeks a way to gain control over her own programs. It’s a story of betrayal, love and control-wrapped in a bloody, full of robot package.
This is why you should stream this clever, scary and provocative film.

Warner Bros.I’m not a horror movie person. I am not looking for blood and gore, I hate the terror of a jump and I still think of “the tethered” Jordan Peele‘S. Us and get random cold. Psychological horror strengthens me out too – I don’t normally want to think of the dark depths of the human soul. Life is scary!
But now and again, a horror film – a horror comedy above all – breaks through and makes me think more about what the story means than how gross I am. Companion In one of those movies. Despite my digestion, I was encouraged to watch him by a friend, and I’m so glad I did.
There is violence and gore, but Iris is such a compelling character that I found myself focusing on her journey towards self-realization instead of the number of people she stabbed (there are a few).
The comedy performances at Companion Also soften the more violent moments. Quaid is funny as Josh, a stereotypical “nice guy” that sounds right. Harvey Guillén (What do we do in the shadows)) Lukas gage (You, the white lotus) Very funny like another couple on the journey. (Their dynamic relationship is fascinating. I won’t ruin it by saying more.)
On the whole, the storytelling in Companion Strong enough to defeat the shortage – and come from this writer, that says something.

Warner Bros. Photos.Locating Iris as the main character, and making her believe that she is human for the first few minutes, makes something very interesting to the narrative – it frames it as the “real person” in the story and Josh as the malicious force. Yes, Iris is a robot, but she is also a woman, and the story serves as a metaphor for the way women often reduce or even have their father -declining in relationships.
Josh can control Iris’s intelligence level through an app, modeling it to its exact options and specifications. Iris is so eager to please him, when she learns the first truth, that she wants to return to her happy relationship alone. “I can make you so, so happy,” she pleads.

Who among us has not overlapped themselves to try to be “perfect” for another significant one? The state of Iris is very familiar to anyone who has felt a partner pulling away and wondering if they could have been better. It’s a wonderfully human feeling.
Iris also remembers having a perfect meeting with Josh, which is usually a ROM-COMS Vulnerable as Bryn Notting. These details are a clever commentary on how the romantic narratives of pop culture shape many women’s identities and how easy it is to define yourself around a relationship.
Its status as a robot provides a rich metaphorical territory in how aggressive men seek to control and treat women – while continuing to consider themselves the hero of the story.

Iris’s status as a companion is surprising, but it is inherent to the film’s default, so it is not surprising to the viewer. But the story is full of unexpected turns, with many of them very surprised.
Although he didn’t get as much hype on -lein with M3gananother viral AI movie with a sequel coming in late June. Companion A sharp, funny story and ultimately moving about a woman – or, very, a machine – seeks autonomy in a world that wants to take her.
