When government lies to their people, to what extent is the stronger effect going? And what kind of unintentional consequences can come as a result? Here are some of the big questions that showwrunner Craig Mazin Asked in his Five Limited Series Cornobyloriginally broadcast on HBO in 2019 and is now available to Stream on max.
If you haven’t seen this elaborate, destructive look on the famous nuclear reactor accident, its themes are more resonant today than ever before. This is why it should make your watch cue this month.

You may know Mazin from his more recent HBO series, The last of uswho stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. Among screen writers, he is known for co-hosting the podcast Scriptnotes With a fellow screenwriter John AugustWhere they break down the elements that make scripts great. His expertise is evident in Cornobylwhich takes different narratives to before, during and after the nuclear disaster and arranges them for the most emotional impact.
May surprise you know that Cornobyl was Mazin’s first drama project. Before HBO miniseries, he was best known for his work on comedies as the A scary movie franchise and The large part III. And yet despite his comedy background, Mazin treats the highly tragic story with tremendous respect and sympathy.
Jared Harris in ‘Chernobyl.’
HboJared Harris (The crown. Mad men) plays the real -life scientist Valery Legasov, Deputy Director of the Russian Nuclear Energy Institute, who is accused of cleaning the devastating effects of the explosion of the Chernobyl reactor. Harris was nominated for Emmy for the role, and the intensity in which he is pursuing justice and truth – even at the cost of his own life – transforms Legasov from a blurry figure into a heroic one.
Other great performances come Stellan Skarsgård (Hunting goodwill) as Boris Shcherbina, another real Russian officer who chose to pursue truth over his own political career, and Emily Watson (Cut the waves) As Ulana Khomyuk, a diligent nuclear physicist based on the number of scientists who researched the explosion.

Although the name “Chernobyl” has become synonymous with an “explosive disaster,” the ordinary American knows little about what the event actually meant for Russia and Ukraine. The long -term impact of the radiation exposure on the people and the land is destructive and essential to understand.
In one particularly devastating scene, a new -born baby one of the locals dies four hours after his birth from exposure to radiation, showing how the effects of this disaster reached one generation to the next.

The Last of us“Infected” monsters inspired by mushrooms are fictional (thankfully), but Mazin’s understanding of the body’s horror is clear in this older series. The physical effects of radiation poison are fully displayed in CornobylAnd the viewer cannot help but get a visual response to the realistic make -up and prostheses used to bring his atrocities to life.
Cornobyl Also taking its viewers inside the fiery depths of a nuclear reactor, and the explosions and other disasters feel much more real and less Bommal than you would see in your film or typical action show.
Three men stand in front of a burning nuclear power plant in ‘Chernobyl.’
HboAfter the expiration of the broadcast series Mazin tweeted, “A lesson Cornobyl Isn’t that modern nuclear power dangerous. The lesson is that lying, arrogance and preventing criticism is dangerous. “
Throughout that CornobylIt becomes clear that the Soviet Government is holding back information from its own scientists in case of admitting any weaknesses. One lie led to another, and led the rippling effects to a lack of design in the Chernobyl reactor who proved fatal. (31 people died as a short -term consequence of the disaster, but the number of estimated deaths of the effects of long -term radiation ranges from as low as 4,000 to as high as 60,000.)
Cornobyl ask you to think about the cost of lies and the importance of transparency from our organizations. Although the series is set in the Soviet Union, its themes echo on a world -class scale. In an age when wrong knowledge and distrust are increasing concerns worldwide, Cornobyl Feels like a powerful cautionary story. While it is likely to bring a tear to your eye, imagery provoking the show, stellar performances and a tragic tragic story make it essential.
