Netflix overflows with movies to watch, and it is impossible for any single person to hold all of them. But one of the joy of subscribing to the biggest streaming service is being able to rediscover films years after they have been in theaters.

Somehow, Keaton was largely ignored during the 2017 Awards season and received no major nominations for his performance as Ray Kroc. Perhaps The founder Also flew under the radar compared to the earlier Keaton film, Birdwho won an Oscar nomination for him for the best actor. Anyway, The founder is the film that should have given Keaton that acting award, partly because he so lovely plays the hero and villain of his own story.
During the first part of the film, Kroc is a salesman who is struggling that can hardly keep his finances together. Simply put, he does not have what he takes to succeed until he gets a piece of McDonald’s. From there, Kroc’s entire arc turns as he worries his way deeper into the company and takes control of it by the real founders. Yet somehow, Kroc does not completely miss the audience’s sympathy, even when he does things that are not treated like stabbing his business partners at the back.

Nick offern and John Carroll Lynch Excellent like Richard “Dick” McDonald and Maurice “Mac” McDonald, the true founders of the restaurant who share their last name. One of the most striking sequences in the film is the extended backpack that chronicles how the McDonald brothers compiled the idea that led to fast food as we know. And more importantly, the audience finds that there are some failures along the way before they find the winning formula.
Lynch or offerman has no place close to the screen time that Keaton does, but both of them are very attractive to watch. Unfortunately for the McDonald brothers, their roles like the founders are shaded by Kroc’s aggressive expansion plans.

That’s another key part of McDonald’s origin: it’s a vague small family business with a franchise that takes its own life and lofty everything in its path. Kroc seems to even like the McDonald brothers, but that doesn’t stop him from betraying them the second they stand in the way of his prestigious plans.

It’s such a transformative experience for him that he hardly knows what to make of it. It is also charming to see Kroc watching the families around him enjoying their meals as the wheels turn in his head about how he can claim part of him for himself.
Modern Corporation McDonald’s may disagree, but this film is actually a very effective advertisement even if it has some dramatic freedoms with the untreated steps that Kroc took to build his empire.
That ties into one of Kroc’s last scenes when he completely explains why he only brought the idea from the McDonald brothers. Kroc saw the value in the longing that McDonald’s motivated, and the power of that longing extends far beyond the reach of this film.
