Someone somewhere Following Sam Miller (Everett), a self-valuing woman who moves back to her hometown of Manhattan, Kansas, to look after his dying sister, Holly. The show rises after Holly’s death, as Sam tries to find out what to do with her life. She often conflicts with her other sister, tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison), as well as her father Henpecked, Ed (Mike Hagerty) and alcoholic mother, Mary Jo (Jane Drake Brody). But when Sam reconnects with an old college of the Joel (Hiller) High School pupil, her world is opened.
What is really wonderful Someone somewhere is how really vibrant his characters feel. There is no “movie star” in sight. You’ve probably seen Everett and Hiller in supporting roles for years, but this show puts them under the spotlight. Hollywood’s typical beauty standards mean that only the most beautiful people in the world usually reach emote or play characters with arcs – but here, every day’s beauty is honored and appreciated. Other standouts include drag King and comedian Murray Hill Like Fred Rococo, a teacher at the local university, and Bagley team As a betrayal, Joel’s love is eventually interested.

It is often assumed that only big cities offer a community for the people of LGBTQIA+ or those who do not fit social norms. Stereotypes usually paint small towns, especially in rural America, as a little mind. And it is certainly the case that Joel, who is gay, comes across some homophobia in Manhattan, Kansas – but the show focuses much more on the beautiful, supportive community that Joel welcomes Sam to.
Joel holds a “Choir Practice” – a weekly concentration that welcomes people from all orientations and faith to sing and connect. Sam’s decision to attend a choir’s practice changes her entire throw – she redirects her from grief and isolation towards healing and community.
The show is tender in its portrayal of Kansas farmland, small shops and churches. “Going out” from the small town is never a goal – just being comfortable and happy where you are. The show honors the life of a small town and paints it as a peaceful, worthy experience, contrasting it to most narratives about nonconformity in rural areas.

While both characters ultimately follow romantic relationships, central bond Someone somewhere is – without a doubt – between Sam and Joel. They both become a “person” each other offering support and challenging each other when needed.
The love between them is what pulls Sam back to life when she drowns in grief – and reminds us of the kind of friend we all need. Someone somewhere Treats romance as “nice-to-get” and friendship as essential. It changes a welcome attitude that we could all stand to remember.
