It’s a complex, non -judgmental look at polygami

Great love revolves around Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton), a man who was spun by his extreme fundamentalist sect (the brotherhood of the united effort, or Ueb) as a teenager. At Salt Lake City, he met and married Barb (Jeanne Tripplhorn), a more modern Mormon woman, and did not intend to follow the “principle” of a large marriage – but when Barb appeared to die of cancer, Nicki married (Cloë sevigny), one of the daughters of the Prophet of Ueb, who helped to look after her.
Miraculously, Barb went relief, leaving Bill with two wives. A few years later Bill fell in love with Marene Heffman (Ginnifer goodwin) And add it to the family as well. When the series starts, Bill, Barb, Nicki and Marene live in nearby houses with a nearby backyard, with their numerous children growing up as siblings.
The back of a store Great loveThe Polygamist family sets up a lot of interesting storytelling, but one of the most fascinating elements is Barb and Nicki’s case. Their marriage to Bill presents a rare case where non -practicing viewers or supporting polygami could still understand how someone might fall in love with more than one person really. For Great love It does not exactly encourage polygami, it does not condemn it either – as long as it is achieved through adult consent, unlike many of the aggressive marriages and enforcement portrayed in the UEB compound.

Today, non-monogamian relationships are more mainstream than ever, though not typical in the context of marriage and religion. If you have seen Great love Previously, it is worth re-watching the similarities that the show draws between polygami and other “stranger” relationship styles, such as same-sex marriage (which was still illegal in most provinces when the show showed for the first time in 2006).

It would be dishonest to say that Great love ever Feeling overcrowded, but it is a testament to the power of the performances that all the story lines are truly immersed. It’s like Game of Thrones In the scope of building it, despite happening in a much more foundation reality.

In spite of the above non -critical attitude towards consensual polygami, Great love Looks sharp and well researched on some of the worst abuse of fundamentalist Mormon sects. The location of minors whose parents believe they are ready for marriage in a “book of joy,” a type of catalog of potential women, is a big plot point for Nicki’s arc in season 3. The “Joy Book” is straight out of the headlines around Warren JeffsFundamentalist leader arrested in 2006. (Great love for the first time the same year.)
