Smart character Deborah Vance is a legendary comedian who seems to share some history in common with the recent Joan Rivers. Decades in the past, Deborah was going to be the first woman to host a late night TV talk show before the whole fell apart. When Hack Starting, Deborah has been a headline action in Las Vegas for decades even as his star power fades.
The show seems to be about the relationship between Deborah and a much younger comedy writer, Ava Daniels (Einbinder). But it’s also the story of Deborah’s return, which doubles as a smart return to prominence as well.
Without a smart charismatic performance, it would be quite difficult to like Deborah. She can be modest or even cruel at times, and has been known to stab people in the back – especially the people who come close to it. There are also deeper layers for Deborah’s persona that explain why she behaves that way. Smart treats the big comedy moments and the smaller character notes with solid conviction. She’s a star, and it’s time for Hollywood to remember to treat her as one.

Hannah Einbedder is more than holding herself as Ava

It takes two to tango, and Hack It wouldn’t be as interesting as it is without Ava Daniels Einbedder to play off Smart Deborah. At the start of the series, Ava’s career as a comedy writer in Hollywood appears to be over. Signing to work with Deborah in Hail Mary for Ava to retain any chance of recovering what he lost.
Ava is far from perfect, but there is something special about the way she and Deborah find common ground. Eininder is also a very funny actress, and Hack is also his retiring role. At some point in the future, Einbedder will probably head her own comedy series. But for now, it is just joy watching her sharing the screen with smart.

We would hesitate to say that Hack Completely related to the power of female friendship, because the relationship between Deborah and Ava can be complete toxic.
Throughout the series, when Deborah and Ava have been at odds, they have done things to hurt each other’s careers – and not accident either. It would not be wrong to describe what they have done to each other as betrayal, and yet Deborah or Ava has never been able to cut their bond permanently.
That’s because at some level, Ava and Deborah really care about each other. Much like the two famous cowboys of Brokeback mountainThey can’t give up.

There are spoilers ahead of us if you’re not up to date Hack by season 3.
At the end of season 3, Deborah nearly ruined Ava’s chance to become the lead author of his new show. Instead of just absorbing that betrayal, Ava blackmailed Deborah and ensured that the stylish creative role went to it, to the obvious resentment of Deborah.
It might be difficult for Deborah and Ava to find a way back to be friends after that. But for the first time, Ava has real power in their relationship. It cannot be dismissed, fired or easily threatened by Deborah. Does that mean Deborah will forgive and forget what Ava did to land her new job? We would bet against him, but it should be very funny to see how their new dynamic plays out in season 4.
