The characters – and their mission – are refreshingly defective

Charlie Wilson is not your typical hero. He is a drinker and cocaine user who staffed his office almost entirely with attractive women. The film never paints it, herring or avrakotos, as perfect – but that’s what makes their passion so inspiring. We all tend to fail, we all have flaws – but that doesn’t mean we can’t do our best to help. HankRoberts and Hoffman make the characters likeable and charming, despite their flaws.

Interestingly, the film also paid homage to what would fall Afghanistan after the Soviets were installed – the rise of the Taliban. The funny film largely ends on something from a downhill note, with the information that Wilson and his countrymen were unable to secure Afghanistan’s future by pushing the US government to provide education and infrastructure. It is a fascinating recognition of how even the best set plans can fall apart, which is also unusual for a historic film of this tone.

The film deviates into complexity – the people and also of the geopolitic in place – leaving the audience painfully conscious, no matter how charismatic you can be, you may not be able to reach your goals.
