In recent development, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has formed a working group to review the world affairs before Cricket’s return to the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028. This movement includes the restructuring of Cricket formats and describing the process of qualifying the Olympic Games in the USA.
Cricket will return to the Olympic Games after more than a century, with the T20 format included in the Los Angeles Games of 2028. However, with only three years to go, there is still no clarity on how teams will qualify for the six -team event. The ICC has not yet provided official details on the qualification process.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the meeting of the Executive Committee (CEC) of July 18 emphasized the need to form a delayed working group.
Your daily dose of cricket!
This group, which is expected to form as soon as Saturday during the ICC Board meeting, will include members of the CEC and the Council. Its main responsibility will be to propose a qualification system for the T20 event of six teams in La28.
Although there is a strong support between the CPI officials and interest groups to use the team rankings to determine Olympic amarces, the final decision has been different from the working group to be formed.
There were informal suggestions to host a qualifying round for the 2028 Cricket event. However, organizing this event is not possible due to a program of congested future visits and limited time.
The ICC has commissioned the working group that will soon be informed with the evaluation of all possible qualification options. If the rankings are chosen as a base, the group will also recommend a proper cut date. La28 will only have six men’s and six women’s teams in T20 format.
The meeting, chaired by the recently appointed CEO Sanjog Gupta, also confirmed that the minimum age for international players will remain 15, but exceptions can be made in special cases. ICC President Jay Shah attended the meeting as a member of the office. According to the real rule, the young feeling of Battle Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who is currently 14 years and 113 days, will have to wait longer before his debut in India.
The ICC is preparing to make a crucial decision on the future of the United States Cricket (USAC), as tensions grow between the governing body and its leadership. A standardization committee, recently sent to the United States, has requested that the USAC officials resign.
The ICC received a directive from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), which requires the USAC to secure the state of the National Government Body (NGB), a prerequisite for any sport included in the 28 Games.
The CPI has warned that not solving USAC’s governance problems could lead to the loss of its official recognition and possibly preventing the North -American team from competing in the Olympic Games, a significant setback for the reintroduction of sport in a global scenario.
