I am 78 years old and my memory “razor is sharp” —I do 5 things every day

No matter what your age, you may have experienced a random memory task, such as the wrong placement of the car’s keys or go out and forget why you are there.

It normal age -related ages forgetfulness. But I found that the key to excellent memory is intentional and active in cognitive events that are enhanced every day.

Now I retired after more than three decades of work professors. But in 78 years oldI’m still write books (More than 175 and count), give professional presentations and blog about psychology.

These are five practices that have kept my memory acute:

1. I go out and go regularly

Social interaction Reduces the effect of depression and stress, both of them contribute to memory loss. High social activity It was also associated with a much less risk of mortality.

When we spend time with relatives, participate in frequent conversations with friends, join public groups, dinners with colleagues, or voluntarily for social reasons, we improve both our mental well -being and cognitive skills.

My wife and I regularly travel with the best friends, voluntarily at the Regional Art Association, and we often visit a local social club.

2. I am a lifelong student

3. I found an organizational system that works for me

Go to my office and you will see an array of the post. I use a color coding system to track my daily responsibilities.

Yellow for the articles I work on, blue for specific sections in the book I write, green for medical reminders (prescription amendments, appointment of a doctor), orange for home tasks and pink for tasks (grocery items, equipment store).

I came across this system when I was working on a new book. I inadvertently wrote previous notes for some sections on different color sticky notes, and my book plan immediately felt clearer. I realized that I could use this approach for other aspects of my life, and this has changed a lot.

4. I am physically active every day

Daily physical activity increases blood flow to all parts of your body, including your brain. Studies show that regular and sustainable exercises are associated with improved brain function, in particular in memory.

For most adults a typical recommendation – at least 150 minutes per week Moderate aerobic activity. This includes fast walking, swimming, cake, tennis or serious gardening.

I swim two to a dozen circles in the public center every day and go one -two miles on the days between them. The key is to make some form of physical activity every day. Even 10 to 15 minutes a day is profitable.

5. I support a healthy diet

Diet, hydration and sleep are so important for your brain health. I’m sure I get at least seven hours (from 11:00 to 18:00) sleep every night.

Ultimately, I approach maintain and improve memory as it is a full -time job. I am every day. I’m curious and productive. I made an effort in my relationship. I’m not afraid to seek help, but I’m also sure I know. Never underestimate the power of those who preferred their memory.
