The Belgian police searched several places in the country as part of an investigation into the European Parliament.
Prosecutors said corruption was “under the guise of commercial lobbying” and that several people were detained for interrogations.
According to the officials, local police had an appeal to Portugal against the case.
The Belgian newspaper Le Soir said the investigation was related to the Chinese technological giant Huawei and its activities in Brussels since 2021. BBC turned to Huawei for comments.
“Corruption has allegedly practiced regularly and very restrained since 2021 to this day, under the guise of commercial lobbying and accepting various forms, such as compensation for political positions, or excessive gifts, such as food costs, or regular invitations to football matches,” the prosecutor’s office explained.
Le Soir reported that several people who were suspected of lobbying at Huawei were detained for allegedly bribery of the current or former MEP (MEP) to promote the company’s trade policy.
A police source told AFP that the deputies were not arrested on Thursday.
A total of 21 raids were conducted in Brussels, Flanders and Volany, the prosecutor’s office said.
In the course of the investigation, the focus is on “active corruption in the European Parliament”, as well as “forgery and use of counterfeit documents”, all within the “criminal organization”, the prosecutor’s office said, which also seeks to reveal possible money laundering.
