How Bill Lawrence Uses Humor to Cope with Watching Wife Christa Miller Kiss Other Men on Screen

Arriving at work with a wife Christa Miller has some advantages for Bill Lawrence but there are also some disadvantages – such as watching her kiss other men.

“I don’t like that at all,” Lawrence, 55, said flatly Us Weekly on Thursday, December 12, in PaleyLive’s An Evening of Shrinking program at the WGA Theatre.

Although it is sometimes “upset” for Lawrence, the couple find that joking about the situation off screen helps ease the awkwardness. That attitude has recently come into play for Lawrence’s current show Shrinkingwhere Miller is married to an on-screen husband Ted McGinley.

“We make (a joke), because I felt personally betrayed,” Lawrence said. “Because in the writers’ room we joke around that Ted McGinley is playing with me and so when bad things happen and she doesn’t respect her husband — I take it personally. Even if I’m involved in writing.”

Lawrence and Miller, 60, have worked together several times since marrying in 1999. Miller, who shares children Charlotte, 24, William, 21, and Henry, 18, with her husband, has appeared on Lawrence projects Scrub, Clone High, Cougar Town a Shrinking.

“Bill definitely sets the tone (on set). Any show I’ve worked on with Bill—down to the cast and crew—Bill has a no—— policy. I know other people like to go along with that and say that, but Bill really has that,” Miller said. The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. “And many of the crew I’ve worked with for many years. Bill has people on the crew that he works with all the time. I feel very safe on his set.”

A miller gued over Lawrence’s commitment to making every set a fun workplace environment.

“Bill sets up a situation – and (Shrinking cocreator and star) Jason (Segel) do this too – where they try to say things that are going to embarrass you, and we don’t have to use it,” he recalled. “Once you do that a few times and you know that nothing bad will happen if you try something and it doesn’t work, you can put your heart out. “

Shrinkingpremiered in 2023, starring Segel as a grief therapist named Jimmy who decides to become much more involved in the lives of his patients as he mourns the death of his wife and learns to raise children as a single father. Miller’s character, meanwhile, is Jimmy’s next door neighbor who is often involved in his life.

“My wife in real life is a bit more modest than her character, so it’s been fun,” Lawrence joked to Us on Thursday before explaining, “No. She is so respectful and she is so cool. Not many guys get to tell their spouses what to wear and what to say. So the fact that I’m doing that makes it more tolerable and I’m not wearing a single garment that I chose for myself and I’m not allowed to make any decisions in my real life.”

While discussing Shrinking‘ success, explained Lawrence how is the popular series Apple TV+ manages to balance light story lines with more serious topics such as mental health.

“The cool thing is, we have a lot of cool writers and performers. We try very hard to call from real life stories,” he shared Us. “(Creator) Brett (Goldstein) also tells you – and Jason – how the show’s central premise is lifted from a true story.”

Lawrence continued: “So I think when you’re talking about, whether it’s Brett and I dealing with family members who have Parkinson’s or people who have dealt with the grief of losing someone in their family, when you start with that authenticity, you don’t get to do goofy things and go wide. Look, all I do is steal people’s lives around.”
