Jack Hinshelwood’s 85-minute strike gave Brighton and Hove Albion a 3-2 victory over Liverpool, as they came twice behind to beat the Premier League champions.
Liverpool had taken leadership soon through Harvey Elliott, but a game defined by Verve and Fluid Attacking Play presented many opportunities for both parties, with Yasin Ayari leveled in the 32nd minute.
Dominik Szoboszlai restored Liverpool’s advantage in a strange way just before half the time, but Kaoru Mitoma again leveled in the 69th minute, while his introduction changed the game, which was established when Hinshelwood became the Matt O’ryle cross.
The victory sees Brighton moving to the eighth at the table, which could still be enough for league football in stage in which Chelsea wins this competition this season, but ends out of the top five.

Mohamed Salah collected a start that is not surprising open, as the Szoboszlai field ball was collected by Mohamed Salah, who played through Conor Bradley to increase on the line and retired from Eliot at home.
Bradley should have achieved it 2-0 when he turned the left on the left after being titled by Federico Chiesa and, after a strong response from Brighton who saw that Danny Welbeck struck the goal of the nearby range, the champions were punished for this proficiency.
After Smart Hold Up Play from Welbeck, Brajan Gruda lifted an excellent ball at the top of the Liverpool defense for Ayari, who fired safely beyond Alisson and towards the lower left corner.
But Liverpool again advanced in strange fashion in the half, the Szoboszlai cum-Cum shot from the right flank after a free lack routine with Elliott taking Bert Verbruggen completely by surprise.
Brighton was apparently not disappointed by this setback, and Welbeck was twice denied by Alisson, first from a free foul and then at the end of an excellent team play that deserved to produce the level.
These possibilities were sandwiched by an element of the collector in the form of a glittering Miss Salah. The Egyptian somehow lowered the place to the right of Cody Gakpo’s lower cross with the goal in his mercy.
That young lady saw in Salah Spurn the opportunity to tie the Premier League record with a 47th participation of the season. Another opportunity for him to claim that this story was begging when, after putting in Gakpo, Salah saw that the Dutch struck a volley on the crossbar.
His next opportunity to move the level with Andy Cole (1993-94) and Alan Shearer (1994-95) came and went with Salah denied by Verbruggen from the timely range.
Again, Liverpool was paid for not having the light of the day between them and the gulls, this time with the wonderful controlled volley of Mitoma in the rebound that beat Alisson after the Japan International had played Welbeck again to be frustrated by Brazil’s goalkeeper.
Mitoma was the best player in the pitch after his introduction in the 65th minute. He struck Alisson’s palms in the nearby office, but it was Hinshelwood who was the hero, playing less than two minutes after leaving the bench, his goal awarded after Var annulled the initial call against O’Reilly.
The eighth is unlikely to be enough for Europe, but this victory against the champions served as another reminder that Brighton will remain a threat to face these rewards in the coming seasons.
