Harvard University rejected the list of wide requirements sent to the White House, which asked the university to change numerous politicians or risk losing billions of dollars in federal funding.
“The university does not give its independence or abandon its constitutional rights,” the university wrote on its X account on Monday.
On Friday, the Trump administration sent Harvard a letter in which the requirements were designed to combat anti -Semitism on the campus, including changes in its management, hiring practice and admission procedure.
In his response, Harvard said he did not “perceive” his duty to fight anti -Semitism, but stated that the government was overcoming.
“The administration recipe goes beyond the Federal Government Power,” Harvard President Alan Garber said in a letter.
The government’s request “violates the rights of the first amendment to Harvard”, “exceeds” its powers and “threatens our values as a private institution,” Garber said.
He added that the threat of reducing funding could endanger vital research.
In his letter, the White House stated that Harvard “has not been able to meet the conditions of intellectual and civil rights in recent years that justify federal investments.”
The letter included 10 categories for the proposed changes, which, according to the White House, were needed to keep Harvard to retain their “financial relations with the Federal Government”.
