ancient India Spinner of the national cricket team Harbhajan Singh he attacked the selectors for not picking Karun Nair to the Indian team. He pointed to the batter’s stats, wondering why the rules are different for the batter while others are selected after only two games.
Karun Nair, who holds the record for a triple century in England, has been setting the stage on fire in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25. The right-hander has been at his best and has taken his team, Vidarbha, to the last eight of the tournament.
In the six innings he has played, Karun Nair has made 664 runs with five centuries and an impressive strike rate of 120.07. He has been dismissed just once in the tournament and is the leading run-scorer in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 so far.
There have been several media reports claiming that the selectors are eyeing Karun Nair ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Many fans and pundits have also called for his inclusion in the squad, especially with the kind of form he is in passing
Harbhajan Singh spoke about Karun Nair’s numbers in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, saying that if he is not picked for the team, it would be unfair to him. He criticized the selectors, saying that players are selected after IPL performances, but those who perform in the domestic circuit are ignored.
He also said that he is still unable to understand why the batsman was dropped from the Indian team after scoring a triple century in Tests. In a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained:
“I’m looking at his stats. In the 2024/25 season, he played six innings, was not out in 5, scored 664 and that was his average. And he’s bowled at a percentage of 120. And they don’t pick him. It’s unfair. Many are selected on the basis of only two games. So why are the rules different for him?
“People say Rohit and Virat are out of form, and you send them in Ranji. But those who play in Ranji and score runs… why are you ignoring them? When will these guys play? Here they are scoring runs. I never Go understand how he was dropped after a triple century. It’s a shame that nobody talks about players like him.”
Harbhajan Singh also hit out at BCCI for dropping Karun Nair after he reached a triple century. He mockingly said that the batsman not wearing fancy clothes or having tattoos would be the reason for his non-selection. He added:
“He went to England with the team but didn’t get a game. For the fifth Test, they actually flew in a player from India, I think it was Hanuman Vihariand played in the Test instead of Nair. Give me the reason for this. Does it make sense?
“Different rules for different people… it shouldn’t be like that. When they’re scoring runs, you gotta play him, right? He doesn’t have tattoos, he doesn’t wear fancy clothes, is that why you don’t pick him? He doesn’t work hard ?”
