The goalkeeper of England, Hannah Hampton, has revealed the personal heart sorrow he brought throughout the Euro 2025, sharing that his grandfather died two days before the tournament began.
The 24-year-old Chelsea star played a key role in the success of Lionesses, producing two crucial savings in the penalty shootout, as England defeated Spain 3-1 in the final after a 1-1 draw in an additional time.
His heroic exhibition earned him the Player of the Match Award and led a prominent campaign.
On Monday, Hampton posted on Instagram with a photo of his green shirt from England, which had “grandfather” written inside the pass and shared an emotional tribute.
“Dear Grandpa. Two days before the biggest tournament in my life, you left.
“It is not yet real. I thought when I would call Nannie I would hear your voice again, one of your jokes or one of those little comments that you would somehow said without saying much.
“You were one of my biggest supporters. You believed in me before you even knew what this journey would be like. You were always there: see, encourage, teach me. You taught me so much, not only about football, but about life. As to keep on the ground, work hard, be resistant and do things in the right way.
“I miss our chats. I miss you saying,” Only athletes understand “, always with a little smile as if you were in something special.
“It breaks my heart that you did not see me out for our country in my first important tournament. Something you dream of for me, which we talked about so many times. I wanted to see your face or listen to your voice after the game returning home. I wanted to share it with you.
“But I know, in the background, you were still there. I felt with me. On the tunnel. On the pitch. In difficult times. I felt you in my head when I needed strength. I hope you were proud, grandfather.”
