Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have confirmed their status as style icons, but their signature wavy hairstyles are legendary in themselves. Their effortless but sophisticated waves, however, are the product of years of refining, as revealed by their long -lasting hairdresser, Mark Townsend.
Townsend, who divided insights on the “Gloss Angeles” podcastrecounts the evolution of sisters’ hair habits over two decades, having worked with the twins Olsen since they were 16.
“Initially, detailed shots and ironworks were essential,” he explained. “He used to be a battle who was sitting in my chair first. He went on to explain that the process included a non -champion iron technique, inflated by” tons of dry shampoo “on the roots and salt spray to make the ends.
As the Olsens embraced a more natural aesthetic, it became less for heavy products and more for that effortless fabric blown by the yellow hair twins are well known for today.
“(They) started to get into air drying, then the fighting came always about who would have to come to me first, because they wanted to dry air as much as possible,” Townsend remembered.

For her part, Ashley was equally determined to protect the elaborate handicrafts of the couture and ban the use of a blow dryer or anything else of that nature. “(She) has applied: ‘I don’t want to use heat, I don’t want to use equipment,’” the stylist reported.

“I laid her hair with clips and left him air-drying, and he turned out so perfectly,” he said. “We had a reference: Jesus.” Indeed, his glam was nothing less than heavenly.
While Mary-Kate and Ashley’s fashion options often overlap, with a shared love for overly large clothing, neutrals and layers, they also have different styles-and hair textures, for that matter.
“They have such different hair; I get to it completely differently,” he explained. “I use a product for each one. Ashley’s hair is much curly and much darker, but Mary-Kate’s is a little coarse.” This individual method underlines the tailored nature of their signature waves.

“They don’t follow trends – they usually set them – so they do what works best for them, what looks best on them and it’s the same with their hair,” said Townsend in 2013 interview with People. “They have such an amazing style; it’s so inspiring. And it’s so personal.” Perhaps that’s why it’s also so aspirational.
