Greece struggles with forest fires, evacuating residents near Athens

Greece fights five major fires across the country, and officials evacuate residents in a tough region only 30 km (18.6 miles) north of Athens.

The smell of burning wood is transferred to the Central Athens, as Greece asked the European Union in the fight against common flames.

The constant emergency is against the background of a strong heat wave. The temperature prognosis on Sunday reaches up to 44C, and the heavy heat is preserved for much of the weekend.

“We suffered firefighters, human life was at risk, the properties were burned, and the forest areas were destroyed,” said the climate crisis of Greece and civil defense minister Giannis Kefology.

High wind and burning temperatures unfolded flames. Greece has officially sought help from the EU civil defense mechanism for six additional fire aircraft.

In the atoics, in the region where Athens is located, a fire that started in Obdda on Saturday was rapidly distributed through Drosopigi, Kryoneri and Agios Stefanos, forcing the residents to run.

While the fire service says the main front is contained, the scattered hot spots continue to burn. More than 200 firefighters supported by helicopters and water aircraft are still working in the area.

On the island of Evo, officials said that the second flame near the pillar came out of control, quickly moving toward Afrati.

Several villages, including Pournos and the wrong, were left without electricity after the flames destroyed pylons and power lines.

So far, six firefighters have been taken to a hospital with burns and smoke when 115 employees continue to fight the flames.

“Destruction is innumerable,” said the Merphyus Merphyus, Georgos Psatas.

In Kitira, the third fire covers a large part of the island, and residents describe the “complete destruction” scenes. Several calculations were evacuated, and the coast security with the help of private boats saved 139 people from the Limnion beach, safely transporting them to the Port.

A fourth fire in a political fire began in Messiah on Saturday morning and increased later on that day.

Five burdened announcements were sent through 112 Greek systems that urge people to leave several villages. Strong winds make it difficult for firefighters: 84 firefighters, 30 vehicles and seven aircraft that decide the explosion.

Meanwhile, in the Crete region in the Shania region, a fifth fire is raging in the Temenia. The fire began in two separate places and quickly spread, destroying at least two houses.

Officials said several regions remained under the further threats of the fire, including the Iyan Islands, Western Greece, Peloponenia, Central Greece, Attica, Epiro, Western Macedonia (Florina, Castor, Kazan), Eastern Macedonia and Trace (Europe)

Last month, the fires on the fifth largest island of Greece in the Northern Aegean Sea destroyed 4,700 hectares (11,600 hectares) of land.

In early July, a fire on the island of Crete forced the evacuation of 5,000 tourists.
