There was an increasing expectation for newly retired Indian Cryvermers Ravichandran Ashwin and Pyush chawla He would appear at the SA20 auction, scheduled for September 9, 2025. However, for the surprise of many, not a single Indian cricketter managed to reach the final list of players who will pass under the hammer.
This year, up to 13 Indian players, including Ashwin and Chawla, had presented their tickets. His absence from the final list has become an important discussion point, especially since Dinesh Karthik Become the first Indian to play in the last season of the SA20 League.
Addressing the matter, Sa20 League Commissioner Greame Smith explained why the Indian names of the final project were missing. According to him, the availability of Indian players is always uncertain and largely depends on their retirement status.
“Indian players are always a fluid situation depending on who is withdrawn and who is available. I think it was as 13 or 14 Indian players at the auction,” Smith said in a virtual media interaction with Indian outlets.
“What we do is that we send the auction lists, which were more than 800 names, to the franchises. Then they send us their short list and then we collect a shortened list that goes to the auction.”
Smith emphasized that Indian cricketers are eligible for franchise leagues like SA20 only once they completely retire from all forms of cricket and move away from BCCI commitments.
The next SA20 auction will see 25 slots abroad and 59 South Sites -Africans. With a large pool of players and limited availability, the franchises are expected to focus on filling the key papers with impact players.
Despite the absence of Indian stars, competition is expected to attract global attention, given its growing popularity and the presence of main international names.
