Former Filler Monty Panesar has expressed the surprise of Team India Batter Kohli’s decision to retire before the five-game test series in English summer. Panesar said that everyone, including England, hoped that Kohli would play in the first series of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27.

Virated Kohli announced his retirement from the test cricket on May 12. The baptism of the right hand, which was expected to be presented in the next series of England, chose to end his career in the longest format. His final test game took place during the 3-1 defeat of India in Australia at the border-gavaskar trophy 2024-25.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Monty Panesar said that Kohli would have been told that if he had not worked well in the first tests, he would not be guaranteed a place for the whole series. Panesar added that this could have influenced Kohli’s decision to remove.

“I think he was definitely going to play. I think England was expecting, everyone was waiting for him to play. I am surprised to be as if he were rescued,” Panesar said Hindustan Times.

“But maybe the fact that, out of the outside, is just thinking, well, you know, maybe they have had a word with him. They said, look, if you don’t write down in the first couple of test games, don’t expect to play all the five. So I probably think, well, I will only call it one day and give young people,” he added.

Virated Kohli finished his test career as the fourth scorer in India

Virated Kohli announced his retirement from the test cricket shortly after Rohit Sharma did the same on May 7. Previously, the legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had also retired during the 2024-25 border trophy after the third test in Brisbane.

Kohli concluded his test career as the fourth scorer in India, with 9,230 runs in 123 games at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 years. The 36 -year -old young man is the most successful test captain in India, who brought the team to 40 wins in 68 games, along with 11 draws.

Delhi -born cricket had already retired from the T20 International after the victory of the World Cup of India 2024 T20. Kohli will now focus on the hate format, with the aim of presenting in the World Cup of Hate 2027.

Virated Kohli endured significant challenges with his battle during the recent Indian Testing series against New Zealand at home and Australia. India lost the two series and could not qualify in the final of the World Test Championship.
