One of the things that Ronald D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica Reboot how successful it is that it was basically everything that Star Trek wasn’t. While Gene Giftenberry’s classic show was about exploring the hopeful exploration of the Cosmos, the Moore series focused on the wild battle of humanity for survival after a racial attack by the Cylons. In spite of the differences between the franchises, though, Battlestar Galactica Inspired by Star Trek to create Cloud 9, a civil fleet ship whose interior looks like a fertile, outdoor planet.
The Battlestar Galactica Reboot Cloud 9 presented in the episode “Colonial Day,” a very political episode that called for a small change in the venue. The Showrunner Moore wanted to introduce some outdoor environments to the show to keep them from feeling too claustrophobic, but also wanted to avoid getting the Galactica to visit a new planet every week a la Trek Star. The answer was to introduce Cloud 9, a civil ship whose inside conveniently looks like a planet’s outside.
At this point, you may be asking yourself why the Battlestar Galactica Showrunner and other producers thought Coud 9 needed the series in the first place. The short answer is that if the show never brings its characters to new locations, viewers will eventually start to get as excited as their favorite characters. This is one of those big reasons GalacticanA show about characters living in space 24/7, still finding so many opportunities to visit Caprica and other planets.
Much of that exploration came later as Ronald Moore became more comfortable with getting these characters to explore strange new worlds. However the Battlestar Galactica Showrunner wanted to create Cloud 9 in season 1 so that the writers did not have to take the main ship and her heroes to a new planet every week as in Star Trek: The original series or The next generation. Thanks to Cloud 9 (a ship that its inside looks like a planet), the show could provide speed change as needed without forcing the title ship to make any diversions.
If the showrunner had been anyone Else, we probably wouldn’t have had a new ship. Our heroes would simply visit a new planet every week, which is the formula made popular by Kirk and Pig. However, Ronald Moore was started in show business by writing for Star Trek: Next Generationand that job largely got because of his great passion for The original series (He even became a Klingon TNG expert because of his love of TOS). Once he started running his own show, Moore seems to want to do something different, so Battlestar Galactica Cloud 9 was introduced so that he would not have to bite Trek style.
As a hard core Battlestar Galactica Fans know, Cloud 9 did not reach the end of the series. Instead, this unusual ship was destroyed with a nuclear device by a version of six (Gina Inviere) whose breakdown with Dr. Baltar for some of a very literal result for our heroes. But we would never have had this ship at the show at all If it wasn’t for Star Trek and his Drope “Planet of the Week” Ron Moore desperately wanted to avoid it. He was ultimately successful (so we say all!) While creating independent sci-fi A series that became bold where no trek had gone before.
