Tyson Fury’s trainer SugarHill Steward has revealed that John Fury will NOT be in his corner during Saturday night’s rematch against unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.
DAZN reports that Papa Fury John will not be in Tyson’s corner during the fight. Some people believe there were too many voices in Fury’s corner during his fight against unified champion Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) earlier this year on May 18, confusing with different voices barking instructions at the ‘beleaguered ‘Gypsy King’.
Having John in the corner wasn’t why Fury lost this fight, but it’s obviously a convenient scapegoat because fans blame why their hero fell short. Fury fans need someone to blame for their Viking falling short against Usyk, because it would be too painful for them to admit that he just wasn’t good enough.
How the fight went wouldn’t have made a difference if John Fury hadn’t been helping. Sugarhill Steward had NO answers for Fury to deal with Usyk’s superior skills, movement and athleticism.
Steward looked like he had lost his senses completely when things started to go wrong for the Gypsy King in the eighth round. Once Fury had a bloody beak in the eighth round, SugarHill couldn’t help him. Tyson was alone. His coach didn’t seem to know what to do. John had the right idea. ‘Attack, attack and attack’.
From what I saw, John was the only one who seemed to have useful advice in the corner that night. If anything, Fury should have ditched his trainer SugarHill and the other assistants and just kept the pope for the rematch.
The things SugarHill had taught Fury since teaming up with him in 2019, such as tilting and tactics, were useless against Usyk. He neutralized this simple approach immediately, leaving Fury with nothing else to fall back on.
