French Hotel for the study of the history of the former and “debt of independence”

French President Emmanuel Macron says he will set up a commission to study the history of French Gaiti and the influence of huge debt imposed on Haiti in exchange for its independence exactly 200 years ago.

Macron said a group of French and Haitian historians would give recommendations that will help build a more “peaceful future”.

Haiti gained independence from France in 1804, but in 1825, France ordered the former colony to pay 150 million Franco’s gold – later decreased to 90 million.

The debt, which was not paid until 1947, contributed to the fact that Haiti became one of the poorest and most unstable countries in America.

The debt became a source of anger among Haitians who called on France to return the money.

It is unclear whether the financial reparations will be on the table in this commission.

The French administrations have recognized the historical wrong slavery in Haiti and other former colonies, but to avoid the real discussion about whether they will return the “debt of independence”.

Macron said the debt “put the price for the freedom of the young nation, which thus faced, with the very creation, with an unfair force of history.”

“Once this necessary and necessary work is completed, this commission offers recommendations to both governments so that they can learn from them and build a more peaceful future,” he added.

In an interview with Le Monde on Thursday, the writer Haiti Monic Kleska said France “losing influence in the world, especially in Africa. His former colonies turn on this back.”

Macron can go somehow change this by recognizing the “injustice” of debt, she said.

“This recognition will not erase the damage that has been caused, but it can alleviate the pain.”

Currently, Haiti is twirling economic chaos, there is little political control and more and more violent bandit war.

More than 5,500 people were killed in the violence associated with the gangs in the Caribbean in 2024, and more than a million people escaped from their homes.

The Haiti transitional Council, a body created to restore the democratic order, has made little progress against the organization long delay.
