France will build a new security prison in the foreign department of French Guiana to accommodate drug dealers and radical Islamists, the country’s Justice Minister said during a visit to the territory.
Gérald Darmanin told the newspapers Le Journal du Dimanche (JDD) that the prison will be focused on organized crime “at all levels” of the drug supply network.
The € 400 million facility (£ 337 million), which can be opened as early as 2028, will be built in an isolated location in the Amazon jungle in the Northwest Region of St. Laano-do-Maroni.
The plan was announced after a number of rigid incidents related to criminal gangs that Saw tours and staff aimed at France in recent months.
The prison contains up to 500 people, with a separate wing designed to accommodate the most dangerous criminals.
In an interview with JDD, the minister said the new prison would be managed by an “extremely strict chant” intended for “incapacity for the most dangerous drug traders”.
Darmanin said the object would be used to detention people “at the beginning of addiction” and also serve as a “strong means of removing the heads of drug trafficking” in mainland France.
French Guyana is France on the northeast coast of South America. Its residents have the right to vote in the French elections and have access to the French social insurance system as well as other subsidies.
Darmanin said his distance from the mainland mainland “will no longer be able to have contact with his criminal networks,” Darmanin said.
The French authorities have long fought for control of mobile phones into the prison network. Famous tens of thousands spread through French prisons.
Earlier this year, the French government announced a new legislation aimed at stopping the activities of criminal groups.
These measures will be created by a specialized department of the prosecutor’s office to combat organized crime. It will also introduce additional powers for investigators and a special protected status for informants.
The creation of new security prisons will also be created – including the facility in French Guiana – for the most powerful drug barons, with tougher rules that regulate visits and communication with the outside world.
In recent months, France has seen a number of attacks on prisons, which Darmanin called “terrorist” incidents that come in response to new government legislation.
Criminals of these attacks have Put on vehicles by prisons, while the La -Fordede prison was hit by shooting.
In some incidents, these attacks are guilty of the defenders of prisoners.
The proposed new facility in French Guiana should be built at a “strategic intersection” for drug mules, especially from Brazil and Surin, AFP -Agency reports.
